death whistles

Type: Concept

As of November 2026, death whistles has been mentioned in one podcast episode on Stuff You Should Know (Feb 2026). The episode centers on Aztec 'death whistles'—their discovery, construction, sound production, and likely ceremonial use rather than battlefield use.

The Aztec death whistle or ehecachichtli is a type of whistle formerly used by the Mexica people. Though the original whistles likely made a wind-like sound, modern replicas usually produce a high-pitched shrieking sound and are most commonly used to scare off people or animals.
