psychological safety

Type: Concept

As of November 2026, psychological safety has been mentioned in 2 episodes across 2 podcasts, first heard Oct 2025 on The Proven Podcast. In the episode featuring Daniel Coyle on John R. Miles' podcast, psychological safety is referenced as a framework for understanding team dynamics, particularly in high-stress situations like the Chilean miners' rescue. Coyle highlights how the Blue Angels exemplify psychological safety by fostering an environment where team members openly discuss performance, enhancing trust and candor. This concept is crucial for effective teamwork and shared vulnerability.

Psychological safety is the belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes. In teams, it refers to team members believing that they can take risks without being shamed by other team members. In psychologically safe teams, team members feel accepted and respected contributing to a better "experience in the workplace". It is also the most studied enabling condition in group dynamics and team learning research.
