What this episode is about

The decision to extend Green Bay Packers head coach Matt Lafleur has sparked debate, with his record of six playoff appearances in seven seasons highlighted as a strong point for retention. While some argue an extension was premature, others believe the lack of available coaching alternatives justifies the move to keep Lafleur at the helm.

Key takeaways

  • Matt LaFleur's six playoff trips in seven seasons beg the question: is consistency enough in a trophy-hungry league?
  • Green Bay's coaching carousel reveals a harsh truth: no clear upgrade options means sticking with the familiar.
  • Having playoff appearances is nice, but a single win with the talent at hand? That's like a beautifully wrapped gift that’s empty inside!
  • The Packers' decision underscores an odd loyalty: is mediocrity now the new winning standard in Green Bay?
  • In a league of bold moves, LaFleur's extension might reflect fear more than faith – what are they afraid of losing?

Talk about another coaching decision. The Packers and head coach Matt Lafleur have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract extension after extensive talks. The sides agreed to a deal to keep Lafleur in Green Bay where he's 7640 and one with six playoff trips in seven seasons. Fellas, do you guys agree with the decision to extend Matt Lafleur? It's good to be right. I don't agree with the decision to extend him, but I agree with the decision to keep him. I think he had maybe one more year on the deal. Let that joint play out. Reason I agree with the decision to keep him, there is no Ben Johnson up for coach this year. There is no Demo Ryan's up for coach this year. The defensive coordinators on the best defenses are like old not super exciting guys. Vance Joseph of the Denver Broncos. Um Matt Burke of the Houston Texans and I even think Demo is more integral in that defense than we know. The Sants on the best offenses in football aren't going anywhere. Shawn McVey has kind of exhausted history.

Kyle Shanahan as of late has exhausted history. So if you're going to get rid of Matt Laflur, you [snorts] weren't going to upgrade. And now that Harbaugh is already gone, you for sure weren't going to upgrade. So I have no issue keeping Matt Laflur, but 25 extending Laflur.

Upgrade for what? From what? You said upgrade. Upgrade from what? What's he what's he done so far to upgrade from?

Upgrade from one playoff win and getting bounced. What is that? That's my point. I don't know if you could have upgraded.

But but I'm saying like what I'm saying is he not really doing much. That's the truth. And I like Matt Maflur. I I I truly do like him. But I'm tired. Every year we get to the same results. No matter what the players they get, what type of player they draft, who they trade for, it's the same results.

Yeah. And I'm thinking like, what are we doing? Cuz all they keep doing is keep paying players and getting the same results. I I don't know why they I mean, like you said, I would have kept him on the roster. I don't even have did that. Yo, I think I' I'd have fired him home. That last game against the Bears, that was bad. I'm now I'm sitting thinking about it because I was wondering like what am I gonna say? And then I and I sit here and I think about that Bears game. He had a lot to do with that loss

and like last year we playing the Eagles there's just couple times in the game we're like damn they had us I'm like they might beat us and then they couldn't do it.

And if you watch the last couple years with him I they don't get it done. So like I I just don't understand that why do ownerships just keep trying the same type of coach and like Shawn McDerm I give you example and I'm done with this.

Shawn Mcderman he hasn't won a big game but there's some games where like boom you can take you can say the 13 seconds whatever you can say that if you want but other than that there's times where he plays well on defense right or coach well on defense and they they're in the game for a reason. I don't see that with him with Matt Maflur. I don't see that with him at all. So like I can understand why some coach would stay or you want to hire him. Keep you know what we're going to get there cuz I see the team we got. I see the coach he is. He's been doing the same thing for the last couple years. I don't know why they kept

the only push back is something you often say. I don't know. Have the Packers missed the playoffs under Laflur.

They missed it yet. They missed it one, right? Maybe five and six. I think they did. Okay.

So, right. So, if he makes the playoffs 83.3 or so% of the time, six out of seven. Six out of seven.

I think that's what that last tweet just said. Yeah, it said six out of seven. Yeah. So if he's made the playoffs six out of seven times,

that's Green Bay. Like that's Green Bay, yo. It's not the Cowboys. It's not Green Bay when McCarthy was in there.

That's not That's not good enough, man. But I'm just saying Shady, like you're firing.

It's not It's not good enough because there's not a lot of gangsters that's are in the NFC.

Who who who are the the true dominant? They're in the north. But I'm the Lions and the Bears was nice.

Okay. Okay. The be Now the Bears was a surprise to everybody in the world. Nobody knew that.

Yeah. But the Vikings demise was a surprise to everybody in the world. I don't think so. the Vikings downfall.

I mean, they they had a a rookie quarterback that hadn't played all year. I mean, what you

I guess we believed in Kevin O'Connell. Here's what we knew. We knew that we knew the NFC North was going to put three teams in the playoffs. We didn't know which three, but we knew they was going to put three in. And I guess they only put two.

I can't say that cuz you didn't you before the year started, you didn't know if the Bears in the playoffs.

No, I thought Lions, Vikings, Packers. Yeah. I didn't I didn't think the Vikings would be that bad. I thought the Lions would make it. But I mean, I guess Shady, if you're going to fire a coach, that's basically a guaranteed walk into the playoffs. But when they lose, a lot of times it be him.

Like, yo, you up 20. What was they up? What was they up three to what? It was 21 to 21 to three.

21 to three, dog. And you get to the game and and you don't run the ball a lot in the second half. I'm thinking like, well, that's what people do. You're up and dudes play Madden, dudes play play flag. You're up. Why not run the ball? It'd be simple things that I don't like that he does.

But so he he got there in 2019. They made the playoffs in 19 2021, missed in 22, and then now 23 24 25. They lost in the wildard round the last two playoffs. They made it to the divisional in 2023, lost in that one. Before that, they lost in the divisional in 2021. Before that, in 2019 and in 2020, they lost uh or they they lost in the in the in the NFC Championship game against uh against Shady and and the Bucks. And in 2019, lost to the 49ers.

He weren't there though, wasn't he? He weren't there. No, he wasn't. 2019 was his first season.

Yeah, he weren't there. Yeah. Isn't it fair though to say Matt Laflur has overachieved as much as he's underachieved? This season I think he underachchieved.

What does that mean? Acha. Meaning like what that mean? Meaning this season he underachieved, right? That's uh scarlet letter. Boom. But when he beat the Cowboys, hell of an overachievement. Check. Um when he loses to the Niners, that's I can't it's not here nor there. It's like the Niners were better, the Niners beat you. When you lose to Tom Brady and the Bucks,

when you continuously blow leads, it's to me it's it's it's it's how it looks though.

You blew leads in those games. Whenever you beat the Cowboys, you went against the 49ers. You had control of that game and they blew that lead

and you're the offensive guy. Yeah. Yeah. You're the offensive guy as well though against Philadelphia last year. I mean, didn't didn't have a chance. Eagles But Eagles here. But if we go through it, here's the point I make.

If you if you go through it, this one Yeah. Go. Uh Matt Laflur has won as many games as he wasn't supposed to win as he's lost as many games as he was supposed to win. That's what I'm getting at. Like Matt Laflur's kind of been a neutral.

He's done. He's not below. He's not above. He's been good. He's been good. So if you're going to fire a guy that's been good, you better get better.

Hold up real quick. Yes, sir. Cuz I know I'm one tripping. Me and James, I was, you know, he's a he was a friend on the show. So, me being a good guy right we was in the the the owner's box washing it. I said, "Take the cu uh the packer stuff off."

He put a nice little shirt on. So, we went in there. We watched this game. Now, y'all just said he had no chances. The Eagles. That is not true.

When they played in the Packers when uh last year when we that was a close game.

You the offensive coach and y'all keep getting the ball, you can't deliver. Yeah. No, the point I'm making though is I'm telling you

the Packers weren't supposed to win that game. It got like 16 to3 going into because the Eagles were not only Super Bowl champs, the Eagles ended up winning like 19 straight games. I show it was it was six to what?

16 to3 going into the fourth quarter. Okay. The Packers were were were down though.

But if you if you watch that game, bro, they had so many chances over and over again to to get the lead, to make plays, but they couldn't do it.

No, the I'm saying the better team won. Like to me a great coach is to me a great coach is a bad coach is are you underperforming and a good coach is are you overperforming. I think Matt Laflur is overperformed as much as he's underperformed because when he beat the Cowboys he wasn't supposed to. When he lost to the Bears this time well he wasn't supposed to. When he lost to the Eagles you weren't supposed to beat the Eagles. So I don't look at Matt Laflur and say he consistently underperforms. But I do look at Matt Laflur and say we've hit our head on the ceiling. But who if you can't get hard who do you

can I be honest? What else you need though? Because you go on FA, you get a really good safety. You now you got Micah. Then you got Gary that's another, you know, great pass rusher on offense, right? You you you got all these speed talented wide receivers drafted,

right? You you got Jacobs, who's who he is. You got the highest one of the highest paid quarterbacks. It's like

you the offensive guy. What do you What do you want to do? You have you have the pieces.

Mhm. Right. It's like it's like you make an excuse for me because he's he's doing good. No, dude. That's not why you getting paid to do good.

My my thought though 25 cuz remember I was saying they need to get rid of him after this year but after you saw the head coaching unfold who do you replace him with?

You know what be you know the funny thing is when they decide to hire him was you hype on him?

Of course. Did you you was oh you hyped when they got him. Why? Cuz the tree comes from

tree. He was young to mind only marginally. I just knew the tree. What my point I'm trying to make is

when he was hired unless you really know football and if you even really know football you didn't know who he was. you know, the tree he came from, right? So, you wasn't super crazy hyped up

cuz nobody even knew him. But then he's, "Oh, damn. He's a good coach." Same thing with um

now Shawn McVey, I I mean, I think you kind of knew a little bit, but you didn't really know.

Yeah. You didn't. You get what I'm saying? Like, you don't really know. So now when he does goes out there and he's a good coach, like, "Oh my god, we have Shawn McVey." But before you knew, you didn't know.

Yeah. Um who else is another one? I think Kyle was going to be good just because it's his his father and all that.

Mike McDaniel's in that tree, too. Now look, you could say he's very Mike McDanielish if you wanted to.

You definitely could with a more talented roster in my opinion. Okay, he's fired. He's fired.

His ass is on the streets looking for a job. And look, Shady, that's what I was going to ask y'all though too. Do y'all not think that they've peaked with Rogers and peaked with especially during his coaching tenure. They It feels like they peaked with Rogers that 2020 season when they lost an NFC championship. And honestly, that first year with Jordan Love, it has not looked that good since on the offensive side of the ball. And I would argue this year, and I know they had their injuries earlier on in the season, they had a good start. They have a extremely talented offense with Josh Jacobs. That offensive line's not that bad. Your wide receivers, you have you might not have a bonafide superstar number one, but you have like four number TWs. You do.

That's like like they they have they have more than enough to go out there and win. And their offense has just not been good enough to do it. And whether that's a Jordan Love issue or a Laflur issue, they need to figure that out. And it needs to be figured out soon because I I I don't know if I'm offering him a huge extension at this point given what he's gone out there and done. Here's what we know. If we're being honest, I think the Packers think we're shady. What you and what I think. I think they would have replaced him. I think they looked around and they said, "Dang, ain't nobody out there worth replacing him with."

All right. Like there's a reason this happened now. But I'm saying that like when you say that, I'm like, "Well,

don't be lazy. The same way you found him from that tree, maybe." You know what I mean? Mhm.

You didn't know he's going to be this a good coach when I think it's because it's it's been a week. So, I think the Packers did their due diligence. I think the Packers have looked around and been like, "Dang,

all right. Ain't nobody's harbog gone." Yeah. And honestly, bro, all the fruit has dried up from the trees. Like, I think about if you look at the Rams coordinators and the Niners coordinators, there's nobody this year that you're like, "Oh, I need to go get." So, I I also think that's a part of the problem. Notice that in this coaching cycle, we're not hearing of like Shawn McVeyy's offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan's offensive coordinator. We hearing about a bunch of old recycled coaches. I just think this is an interesting coaching cycle. I get [snorts] why they did it what they
