Hello. Welcome to Duncan. What can I get for you today? Um, a little less attitude.
Ma'am, there's a long line. What can I get for you? Please never call me ma'am. I'm only 34 and I just turned it in August.
Sorry. Um, it sounds like there's a siren behind you. The cops are coming. The cops are coming because they know you don't really have a license. I think it's important on the road to occasionally leave the hotel room even though it's scary and hard. Push.
No. Fun. Cute. Trash. We're titling this episode the things we do instead of going to therapy.
We're back trying something new. And it's called New Jersey. Anywhere else in the country, I feel like malls are dead. Not in Jersey. They don't pump their own gas. I actually think they have the best pizza in the tri state. I think it's a condensed amount of Italians in one place where in New York City, we're kind of spread out. You know, we don't talk as much.
Back communication. We have burrows in between us. When you hear we use our hands so much.
They're all right there. Yeah. Paige just came back from France. from Paris. We
I just came back from Pittsburgh. Similar architecture. I actually Pittsburgh is the Florence of the Midwest.
Today on Hannah and Paige try new things. We're going behind the counter at Duncan in New Jersey to learn what they're really doing back there.
We're getting behind the scenes access to like how they make things and they're letting us make it, which we don't know the legalities of this. My parents only
same with will have Duncan beans. They don't even know other beans exist except Rabano.
Well, of course. Of course. Also, the difference between Oh, I texted Hannah this morning and I was like, "Hey, what are you wearing to this?" Hannah responds, "What are you wearing?" So I was just like
you go okay I had it was also an hour later so I had already picked out my outfit so like how easy for her. And then I told her my outfit and she goes cool I'm going to wear Jords.
I'm moving so all my stuff is in boxes and I couldn't find anything except the Jords conveniently. I wanted to wear them anyway
but um couldn't find my like hairbrush. Growing up any given weekend there were people sleeping at my house. So every Saturday morning and Sunday morning, my dad would go to Duncan and get a box of Munchkins. I don't think my dad knows about refreshers cuz he's only ever drank black coffee since he was seven. But my So I would have to say Munchkins are my favorite, but now I'm really into the blueberry refresher with lemonade.
I get the mango pineapple with green tea, less concentrate because your mom would get mad at you. Well, cuz when I was little, if I drank things like full apple juice, I was bashing my head through a wall. She had to warn the babysitter. She was like, "Don't give her full apple juice. You have to water it down." Like when I was in high school, I would get like green tea. It made like my my knees start shaking.
That's why she's wearing That's why I wear George now. Thank you. [singing and music] Pamis Duncan is like a vibe.
Okay, guys. We're in New Jersey. If you didn't know, Pamis Duncan is like the hot spot.
Yeah. For coffee in New Jersey. Yeah. This drive-thru has been really busy. This is like Architectural Digest. So, the best part about Duncan is these custom knobs.
You'll never find them anywhere else. Come on. Custom knobs. Hello. How are you?
Hi, Paige. Oh my good. Nice to meet you. I'm actually really excited. Oh my god, your eye shadow looks so good. She's camera ready.
Stop it, please. Wait, how do you pronounce your name? Okay, so my name is Meris, but everybody calls me Merms with a Z.
Merms with a Z. I am a research and development technologist at Duncan for Beverage Innovation. That's a long title.
Women in STEM. Show us the magic behind the counter. Okay, let's go. I've never been behind the counter.
How do you not just like take a donut as you're walking by? The third floor is like a whole cafeteria with a whole case. Okay. So, are you ready to start mixology? I'm ready.
I was born ready. Here you go. Thank you. As a tennis player, I had I always wore a visor and I thought it was really chic. Wait, is it weird that it's going around my clip?
No, it looks cool. Are you sure? You guys are just saying that. Yeah. Well, do you like my Jord?
Yes, I love your Jord. You look like a mom. Now we're just going to attack each other for 10 minutes.
You look like a mom that has like orange slices in the back of her minivan. Even though they lost, the team lost.
I was going to say, you look like you're at like a PTA baking bake off. Bake off.
And I'm like, you bought those disqualified. It's the mother and her. Okay. What's the first thing we're going to learn how to make?
Okay. Well, I was thinking your guys's favorite thing is like refreshers, right?
Yeah. I like the blueberry. Hannah likes the mango. Okay. So, we can start off with that. I could show you how to make one and then I can like give you free reign to try to create your own.
Okay. Also, anything we make, we're gonna have Grace taste test because Grace is trying to have a relaxing day and we're not gonna let her.
Yeah. Let's do the blueberry breeze. So, we have the blueberry. Shake, shake, shake. If you want it less sweet, you can ask for less concentrate, but normally our standard is two. So,
that's Hannah. She likes it less. I do less cuz I get really hyped up. Yeah, me too. We use all natural colors and flavors.
Oh, all natural colors and flavors. This is the lemonade, nasi tea. You just top it off.
That is good technique. I don't do my nails, but if I had nails, I'd be like, "Look at this."
Beautiful. I love that. Lovely. You know when like sweet hits the back of your cheeks?
Yeah. She's jacked up. Gets me going. Okay, now we're going to both make one for Grace to try. Grace, tell us like in general, what do you like?
What's your favorite color? Let's say pink. Okay. We can't get too specific. Can't get too specific.
I feel like we need dramatic music. First round. Who's going to make the better refresher for Grace? Hannah or Paige?
We'll see. So, I'm going to do the timer for 3 minutes. Behind. Behind the line. She's over the line with her with her.
I feel like you wore sneakers on purpose so that you could run. Are you Mark? Her pointed heel is over the line.
On your mark, get set, go. This is faster. She's faster. I have longer legs. She does have longer legs.
Okay, she's blocking. Blocking. Oh, shoot. I literally Oh, I forgot. Behind. Behind. 86. 86.
Oh, shoot. I forgot what the line was. Oh shoot. Better speed up. Better speed up.
I'm sorry. We're busy. 30 seconds down, ladies. What is that? You don't need to know.
Where did you get that? You don't Where did you know? You weren't paying attention obviously.
Where did you get that from? Gosh darn it. Watch this. We have to pay a pumpkin. Okay. Millennial Pink. Grace is going to hate that. out.
Wow. You give me a top. Okay. And fito. Grace, you're gonna rate them based on style, taste, and passion. Are you ready?
I'm ready. Pages first. Okay. Okay. I decided not to take your straw out because sanitary reasons. Um, and I gave you a top in case you're on the go. Um, I gave you something just like refreshing, pretty, but also like a little fizz in there.
Okay, first impressions are good. Okay, she took the note about not too sweet. Okay,
beautiful. [gasps and laughter] I'm ready, Hannah. Okay, excuse me. I have to present.
So, um, so this is a take on a refresher. This is a deconstruct. I call it millennial mocha. Now, one thing I realized is some of the ingredients. I thought this was normal water. I didn't know it was sparkling. Okay, we have some surprises. I wanted to mix it for you and have the straw there so she didn't have to put in extra work.
You're presenting to Grace, not me. I don't know why you're looking back at me.
I'm so scared. I feel like lids can actually be like um limiting. There's enough barriers for women.
Yeah, there's enough barriers holding us down. And also every now and then, do you just want to, you know? Um, okay. So, actually, what what did I put in here?
I believe it's strawberry dragon fruit with oat milk with a splash of seltzer. And you don't want it. You're done. A splash of seltzer and just some love of life.
First impressions, Grace? Not good. Not good. What I did is not available at Duncan locations.
You didn't do the ice line. You didn't? Yeah. And you didn't do My ice was too low.
Your ice was low. Enough ice. And you didn't put enough concentrate in there. Feel the difference.
Yeah. Yours sat in the car for 2 hours. Okay. You win. Are you happy? You happy now?
That's the whole reason I came. Well, it looks really good. It looks pretty. It looks really good.
You have to make me feel better. A lot of people get by on that. Just looking good and not and not doing anything else.
It's my first day. I have to say I'm delusional. Part of me when I was doing it was like
we're going to put it on the menu. I knew that's what she was thinking. She's like, "This is going to be so good. Mr. Duncan himself is going to call and be like, "We're actually going to name it the Hannah. We're putting it in all 8 million stores."
Who thought of this combination? They were either mentally sick in the head or a genius. And you know what? Today we weren't a genius, but you have to keep pushing.
Mhm. I'm going to show you how to make a latte. Okay, that one's like a more complicated drink. Honestly, let's make this a signature latte. Let's go crazy with whipped cream. Okay, so we're going to do the blueberry flavor shot and
butter pecan. Is it pecan or pecan? Great question. I say like pecan pie, but I say butter pecan. We've literally had this discussion at corporate.
Someone in the seauite needs to put the foot down. Butter pecan. So, for swirls, the standard is two pumps, three pumps, four pumps. So, we're going to do two pumps.
Pay attention. Sorry. She doesn't love math with the flavor shots. This is like a card game. Start explaining it and you're like,
"Yeah." Yeah. It's like a new game. Like, let's just do one round and then you'll get it.
Let's wing it. Wait, can you start over? Here we go. Wow. Oh, I always wondered what those really long spoons were for.
Wait, this is so aesthetically That looks nice. That's nice. Just for fun, we're going to do whipped cream on it
cuz she knows what I like. Oh my god. Cinnamon sugar. I actually feel like we need more whipped cream. No, I'm just kidding. Wait, look how gorgeous.
This is actually what I'm a professional at. It's called the bend and sip. Lovely. She's going to take a break and we'll be right back.
Round two. You're going to make a fun ice latte and you can make put your own creative spin. Okay. Try to make this edible handle. Okay. [clears throat] Ready, set, go.
Okay. I thought the ice slime was like a recommendation before I didn't like. Nope. Definitely not how you do it.
Wait, she looked like she was facing out. She was paying attention. Excuse me. Pardon me.
Behind. Behind. Oh, this is actual caramel. Oops. I feel like I'm focusing so hard.
Wait, that color is beautiful. M. The smell of Duncan beans. Now I need to put some Not the rainbow. Yes.
Wait. I'm feeling so creative. 30 seconds. 30 sec. Oh. Chap. Tap. Hurry up. What in the hell?
I'm going to start counting down. Do it from five. Wait. [screaming] Two. Hands up.
Wait, wait. I wait. Okay. Illegal powder. That's illegal. Cinnamon. I have to put my stuff away.
Illegal. Paige, what did you make? Um, I forget what I put in here. Okay. But I topped it with cold film.
Thank you. Good. Good description. It's a really judgy stance. But don't puff your foot to me.
She also doesn't like coffee. Yeah, I don't like coffee. Okay. Well, then why are you judging this competition?
Wait, what do you think? Taste. It's good. Like, it's good. One to 10. Not giving like there's nothing really special about it.
Okay. But I would say like it sounds like you're breaking up with me. Like I know there's something better. I just haven't found it yet.
Okay. Okay, Hannah, what do you present? Um, cuz Duncan's probably going to want to sell this at their stores. This is called Caramel Cowgirl.
Oh, wow. And it's not a it's not a sex position. Not sold in stores. There's a plethora of fusion of of sweet and [singing and music] salty. And it's it's just the flavor is incredible. And I just want you to experience for yourself.
I mean, the chef has preferences for how I enjoy it, but you can do it however you feel. Okay.
[clears throat] Is it good? No. It's so bad. Does it taste exactly the same? If you put them both,
we made the same drink with different ingredients. We made the same drink. Now taste mine.
Liza, [screaming] it's go time, girl. Okay, we got two new straws. Why is there no lid on there?
Right. Exact. And that's what I thought. That's because I believe in freedom and I believe in capitalism. So we can hop on mine.
Yes. What kind of lid is that? That's just like in case she's she's red deducted 10 points.
Let's see what's going on here. Okay. Okay. All right. That was illegal powder on the top of that one, too.
I gave her just a few seconds. You got Thank you. Is there coffee here? Exactly.
If you were to give us any um tips, make it with passion. I don't really care. Enjoy it.
Yeah. Which one do you think is prettier? They're both cute. Yeah. Liza, what is your position at the store?
I am the area manager for the store. So, you can fire people. Yeah. I don't like to.
When's the last time you fired someone? Do you want to fire us right now? No, you just started.
Yeah, we just started. Have you seen my performance today? What is our next challenge? We're going to build a dozen donut box. Okay.
Do you know what a dozen is? 12. A baker's dozen is 13. Don't try and trip me up.
I've been ordering donuts and bagels since I came out of the womb. I like to put in whatever I like to get. You know, what do you think the customer is going to enjoy?
Okay. Wait. Oh, wait. Are we going? We're I'm going. Okay. Very focused right now.
Oh, shoot. Behind. Oh my goodness, there's so many. Sorry, behind. Wait, shoot. I lost count. One, two three four five six seven 8 9 10 11. Wait, I need one more. 12.
Um, a damn mess. How did you get yours so flat? Let's see. You're very powerful right now.
Thanks, guys. You're welcome, Liza. This one's obviously nicely placed. Okay. Well,
but a lot of good options over here. I have good options. You have good options. You got the coconut. You got the strawberry. You do two strawberries with and without sprinkles right?
With sprinkles, without sprinkles. Repetitive. Overexplaining herself. Nah, she passed the test. You both did. But we definitely got to lay them down cuz we can't close the box.
Deduction. I wanted them to be friends and be touching and so you get a little flavor from the other one on the other one. So Hannah won that one.
Why don't we do the drive-thru? So, you're going to wear a headset? Yeah, I need a headset.
Okay, Grace, are you nervous me driving you to get some Duncan right now? I'm excited.
I've never driven this in a car this big. It's huge. Cuz we're about to order a lot of donuts. I think she's going to love wearing the Britney Spears headset.
I have a headset and it's my new personality. Do you ever just sing into it? We have a lot of fun with it.
How do you think Paige is going to do? Look, listening isn't her strong suit. Any customer service tips?
When they pull up, "Hi, good morning. Welcome to Duncan. What could I get for you today?"
Are you ever just like, "You know what? You No, but I feel like as long as she tries, like I'm proud of her."
The headset on the top you see right here, that's where you pick it up. Oh, we'll hear them when they pull up. Okay. So, it'll beep. See, that's where your drive-thru is.
Oh, right there. Okay. Seat belts. Oh, the parking brake. It's this. Oh, also the car is not on.
Hannah doesn't really even have her license so Uhoh. Okay. She's nervous. Her leg is shaking. Her jort is shaking.
Okay. Where are they? Okay. Where do you put your hands? Six and nine. I've never driven in a car with Hannah. And you want to know what? I don't plan on it for my rest of whole life. That would be crazy.
You got to give her a chance. I'd rather walk. Oh my god. Are we going go on a highway with her? No. She just got her license yesterday to park.
She's almost 35. Why does every car have different buttons everywhere? Like, why don't they just have the same We're going so slow. What do we want? I think I want a refresher. Good morning. Duncan, what can I get for you today?
Um, a little less attitude. Um, ma'am, we're there's a long line. What can I get for you?
Please never call me ma'am. I'm only 34 and I just turned it in August. Sorry. Um, it sounds like there's a siren behind you.
The cops are Hey, before we get arrested, what is the goal? I'm trying to order.
Ma'am, there's a lot happening here. What is the golden hour refresher? The golden hour refresher. Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's a refresher and it looks like golden hour.
This is the sassiest exchange I've ever had. Well, I have a headset on, so I'm different. I kind of love it. Like, it's like having walkie-talkies.
This is basically us voice noting each other in the Okay, ma'am. Like, other people want drinking food. You call me ma'am one more time.
Give me a surprise refresher. Okay. A surprise refresher so you can mix it. Okay. So, [clears throat] please let me delete something in my system.
So, mix it. Okay. So, you want to mix your own. And what what flavor would you like?
It's a surprise. Wait, my daughter would like something. Grace, what would you like to order?
We have to give her water because she's rambunctious. Are you talking about me right now? Sorry. Um, please don't ask what we do inside of my workplace. Wait, she wants one more thing. Um, but she's like she's slow.
The item's done. It is done. Okay. What would your daughter like? What is with like the tone?
How about a hash brown? Oh, actually that would be quite nice. Can you throw in just like one munchkin?
Throw in one munchkin. What does this look like? It comes in either 6 12 Oh, yeah. Actually, I can throw in one munchkin.
Oh. Um, sorry about that, ma'am. Do you know that's what I call Grace? My little munchkin.
It sounds like we're breaking up. Sorry, we can't hear you. Please pull up. Your orders ready.
Oh, this is a difficult turn. Okay, this is I'm turning. Why is this the biggest car ever?
I mean, took you long enough. Would it take you eight years to pull around? The turn was so scary.
Wait, I'm too far. I'm too far. Ah. Okay, we're going to have to go in reverse.
Okay. Mango, strawberry. I'm so scared right now. Am I doing this right? Yeah, you're
mango, pineapple, strawberry, dragon fruit, and water. But she'll literally get what I give her.
So that's raspberry, watermelon, straw. She won't know the difference. What am I? Oh, I'm close to the left.
Are you okay? And let's just give her a little lemonade. Okay. Straw chop chop in there.
I actually made it better. Oh my god. I changed your order a little bit. She takes
Okay. What else did you get? Hash brown and one munchkin. What flavor munchkin?
Throw in two munchkins. Well, I can't throw in two munchkins now. You would have already paid.
Okay. What? Don't know what she's doing. Okay. I didn't know Duncan was so Italian.
Don't go out to my window. One. High five. You're doing a great job. Wait, look at my heads up.
You love it. Okay. One munchkin. Wow. Really good. And look, it looks like a sunset.
Now, don't leave the paper in there cuz that's a hazard. That's a hazard because you touched it.
Did you catch it on camera? Don't mind that. Just one minute. There's a whole line forming behind me. By the way, you got this.
What? They got again. Hash browns, right? How many? There we go. I'm going to be asleep when she comes back.
Just one more second. A little box. Oh, cute, right? Yeah. Don't forget to get paid.
You guys didn't pay me. Hannah, you didn't pay me. Sorry, I fell asleep. It took so long.
Is the car in park? Who knows? Um, thank you. Grace, do you have any money? Cuz I forgot my wallet.
Cash, credit? We have um a charger, one charging cube, and this some garbage from my vand.
Thank you so much. She loves She loves it. Sorry, I'm actually getting another call.
Um bye, Okay, bye. Thank you, my queen. My everything. Love you, kid. Thank you for teaching us everything.
Wait, now we have to go to the Pamas Duncan all the time. Sorry, we're actually closed.
You love the power. I like would want someone to fight and be like I be like, "Pull up then, bitch."
You never paid though. I told you she wouldn't pay. Behind. Behind. 86. Behind.
Behind. 86. [singing] Behind. Um, ma'am. Okay, ma'am. Ma'am, sorry about that, ma'am. Um, what flavor do you want?
