5:26 nice bed track so first of all As Above So Below this is is a perennial classic for me I watch this pretty much every year it is one of my favorite modern horror movies it's found footage movie uh but it has very high production value so basically the plot of As Above So Below it is about Scarlet Marlo who is the daughter of a sort of Indiana Jones were to understand sort of Indiana Jones kind of Explorer guy who has spent his entire life looking for the true philosopher stone made famous by Harry Potter in recent years that's actually a real Mythic real mythical artifact of the Alchemists it was the stone that was meant to um have the power to turn base Metals into gold using the alchemical process and also Grant potentially everlasting life um so Scarlet is continuing her father's quest to find the philosopher stone uh we start at the beginning of the movie She's in I believe Iran um looking at this artifact

6:36 that this big statue that has these basically riddles on it they give her a location to go to to find the stone which is the catacombs Under Paris um so she gathers a team and Ventures deep into the catacombs they come across a terrifying Pagan cult people who live in the catacombs they spend their entire lives down there essentially and uh much more sinister forces um what I love about this movie it creates a real sense of claustrophobia um basically because it looks like they're actually shooting in the catacombs for most of the film uh and I believe a lot of it was shot in the actual catacombs that there are some scenes that must be sets if you've seen the movie you know what I mean um but it looks very authentic either way um so they're in these extremely tight spaces because they're not just in the catacombs they're actually caving they're going deeper into the less trotten areas of the Catacombs Under

7:32 Paris these ancient caves um so they're in these extremely tight squeezes in the caves and they know something often throughout the movie as they go deeper and deeper they're in these dark tight caves and they know something is either in front of them or behind them ready to ready to emerge from the darkness uh and that's the other just amazing thing in this film technically is the use of actual Darkness so it is found footage and they do a great use of using flashlight lights headlights stuff like that um to light the scenes rather than sort of creating artificial darkness which you'll see in a lot of movies in general but horror movies especially in dark scenes basically the light will have like a bluish Hue to it and there won't be a lot of Shadow basically you'll see like a shot of a room and everything's visible because they lit the entire room to be completely visible so you can see everything around the

8:26 character in the background whereas if you're looking at a that's actually lit with true Darkness you'll have a hard light on the actor and then behind them around them everything is just pure black it's basically what you would see if you go into a completely dark room and just turn on a flashlight and that's what you get in this movie so a lot of this movie you're just staring into complete darkness and it's terrifying um so yeah I don't want to give too much away but here's some uh some shots actually from it so you can see what I'm talking about so so I mean that looks like a real cave to me that would be terrible I mean what she's doing right there I'd be fine with but you're going any deeper than that and I'm out so here they are in the caves and then a sense of that darkness that I'm talking about that's a little bit of what I tried to capture with the series doors uh and this is one of the main

9:20 movies that made me want to do something in the found footage genre uh which I did by way of analog horror with my series doors uh my next um well what else do I have to say about as above so below I don't know check it out if you haven't seen it it's a very well regarded in the found footage communities online and stuff like that but check it out it it really sticks with you because it's one of those movies that's just all darkness and silence after the movie ends you're kind of just listening for every little noise you hear in your house it's pretty fantastic and my next recommendation is another podcast from creep cast that's who I got here on the that way on the screen um The Creep cast boys they did a episode on pen pal which is a classic Creepy Pasta um which I actually had read the first two or three parts of and then gave up on um but if you listen to it with the creep cast boys they really get you through

10:21 some of the aspects of creepy pastas that are maybe a bit tough to muscle through on your own because they they are amateur writing styles you might jump out this is just my experience sometimes you start reading something and it's just not getting to the point fast enough so you kind of jump out and don't finish the story um this was one of those for me and then listening to it with creep cast they really kind of talk you through those weaker points of some of the some of the stories but this story is uh pretty terrifying especially a certain point in the story um involves a character character hiding in the crawl space under a house while his friend is breaking into the house above him and then he hears some a separate set of footsteps come into the house and find his friend in head house and it's just an amazing sequence it's it's really well written um but yeah that's pen pal and check out the creep cast episode on
