This seems sketchy. Oh. Oh. Almost lost it. Oh no. You guys are gonna judge how we have applied what we've learned here today.

Okay. All right. And you do have to deem a winner. Winner. Okay. I love that. YEP.

IN THE RING. GO. GET IT IN THE HOUSE. Welcome real ones to another episode of FAFO presented by not going to lie a wave original. I'm Kylie Kelsey here with YouTube and NBC. As you can see today, I'm literally covering new ground. That's right, I'm here around on the ice at the US Olympic curling team trials in Sou Falls, South Dakota. Who thought I'd ever say that? I can promise you I'm going to wipe out at least three times. A minimum. I'm going to eat [ __ ] three times. I can feel it. But the last time I wiped out, I think we have someone who can weigh in on that. Jason, that's right. He was here the whole time. Jason, can you uh inform the real ones about the last time you got to watch me eat [ __ ] on ice? Um well it was it was just a fantastic display of um unathleticism, poor coordination of

you fell out. I was right. Everybody pulled out part of being on ice. That was the perfect description of what happened. Um we were ice skating.

Yes, we were ice skating in Kansas City on an outdoor rink which actually he was about to try to give me like

outdoor rinks are very hard. You were also using rental skates. Like there was a lot of

compounding issues here. the degree to which I ate [ __ ] though. Listen, if you're not if you don't eat [ __ ] on the ice, it means you're not testing your boundaries, people. You need to in order to get better, you got to fall down to pick yourself up so you can get better. The last time that we discussed us being on ice together was a discussion about I believe it was our second or third date

uh where you bent down to Tiger Skate and promptly said whoops. I farted and wasn't trying to belly in the way of my knee trying to tie a skate. It literally gets you every time. You were talking about fart machines the other day on

I don't need a fart machine. I'm I am a fart machine. It sparked the interest of our children. So, we'll keep you up to date on how that pans out.

My finger is a fart machine. All right. The surprise has been given up. Today, joining me for my FFO episode is my mixed doubles curling partner in life.

It's my husband. I sweep for you anytime. Would you? Oh, of course. M. That's so that's so nice. Luckily, we're not [ __ ] around alone on this ice sheet. Today we have an Olympian. What? He is a Olympic gold medalist and TV broadcaster.

Tyler George. Hey. Hey guys. He's been here the whole time. Yeah, I know. Great show.

That's right. He was here the whole time. So Tyler, as you can probably guess, we absolutely love watching curling every time the Winter Olympics rolls around, but don't let these sweet fits fool you.

I know we've never swept. You guys look amazing. We don't even get stuff like that. Those are awesome.

They wanted to know. This is a fake it till you make it situation. So, one of the big questions we're here to find out is whether or not being athletes ourselves or well now former athletes ourselves. I can say that collectively now. Um, being former athletes does it give us a leg up on trying curling?

Yeah, it'll give you a good start. I mean, anybody that's athletic starting another sport has a leg up, but there's a lot to curling that doesn't really translate to other sports. You're definitely going to feel it tomorrow. But when we show you the ropes, I think you'll pick it up pretty quick.

Start out with the most basic question. Why is it called curling? All right. So, when you throw a stone down the ice, you're throwing it with one rotation the other, clockwise or counterclockwise every time. And the motion that the rock takes when it's curving, that's called curling. So, every single shot we throw, that's what we do. And the more weight you throw, the less it curls. The less weight you throw, the more it curls.

Okay. Is it like golf where I feel like in golf they're always trying to hit like a shot shape. You would never just throw a straight

rock. It'd be like a knuckle ball in baseball. If you don't put the rotation on it yourself, the rock could go in any direction. So that's how we control where it goes by putting either that one rotation on or the other one.

Okay. All right. And it's formerly called a stone. Yeah. Stone or rock. Either works.

Okay. And then the uh sweeping. Yeah, that thing. Is it a broom? It is a broom. Yes.

And it's called a broom. It is called a broom. So, I love how straightforward this is. And you rotate jobs, correct?

Yep. Everybody throws. So, four players on each team. Everybody throws two stones and you rotate with the opposite team. You have a lead, a second, a third, and a skip on each team.

The lead and the second will throw, or excuse me, they'll sweep six stones in general. Now, some teams monkey with the lineups a little bit, but this is the standard.

So, those two will sweep six stones. The third will sweep the first four stones. Yep. And then they'll throw their two and then they'll call the house. They'll be the acting skip when the skip throws. Now the skip's the lazy one. They never have to sweep. They just stand at the other end the whole time and yell at you. Just boss people.

That's exactly right. So if you want to be the boss, you're the skip. It's really a chess match on ice, but you're using 42 lb stones to do it.

Now once the stone goes is thrown. Sure. You are trying to land it, I'm assuming, smack dab in the middle of that bullseye

sometimes. Now you're setting up position for stones. Yeah. The go isn't that where you're scoring them.

You got to set up the positioning. No, no, I know that there's strategy to it. God, I'm talking about the bare minimum.

Yeah. So the the way you would score, if all the the stones have been thrown in any given ends, the ones that are closest to the center of the house, the 12T target are the ones that score. So however many of your stones you have closer than your opponent after all 16 have been thrown, that's how many points you score. So you could have all eight of your stones in the house, but if your opponent has one that's closer than that, they score one. You you get zero.

Only one team can score per. I like that you just mentioned uh end. Yeah. Yeah.

So there what is? So it's like in tennis there's there's uh what games, sets, match. What is what are the what's the terminology?

Yeah. N is like an inning in baseball. And that's four throws for each person. Uh it's eight per team.

Eight per team. Yep. And two for each person. And for a regular competitive game on tour, you have eight ends in a game. For championship competition like the Olympics, the trials here, the World Championships, nationals, those would be 10.

How often do people eat [ __ ] Well, I did it at the World Championships. So, I mean, it does happen at all levels. You try to teach people if you're going to fall, you fall on your butt.

Yeah. Softest spot for sure. Strategy. Yeah. A lot of the times I'll see like you throw it like a block rather than just going for the center. Like,

do as a shooter, do the blocks actually interfere that much with your shots? They can. Yeah. So, anything we throw that's in front of the house but over the hog line, which is what you need to get over for it to be in front to be cleared,

we call it a guard. Guard, sorry. Thank you. So, it does block the house, too. I'm a football. I block. So,

let's let's just stick with block for this. Let's let's stay in our room. Yeah.

So, they you use that more as an offensive play than a defensive one. Got it. Because if everything is wide open, like you said, just throw it in the center, right? Well, if that's wide open, an elite player is going to be able to hit that stone out 99 times out of 100. Trash talk happens. That was my next question. I figured we're going there.

I was just curious, you know, I don't know. Well, while they're shooting for me, well, he wants to know if it's okay to do this now today. Absolutely is.

No, but if you are playing like a player that you know has like a very emotional guy.

Yeah. Will there ever be any like kind of gamesmanship there to like kind of get that out of him? up.

There can be, and I know this has happened this week cuz I'm up in the booth and they're miked up.

There are teams and players that will chirp each other a little bit. And the two teams in particular that are playing in the men's final, absolutely, it's going to happen.

I love it. What would you say, just to sort of round it out here, is the biggest misconception about curling

that is not athletic. Uh other athletes come in and play and they're hurting like crazy the next day. And you know, we've had athletes from every sport imaginable. And I mean, you can speak with Jared Allen, I'm sure you know, that has now kind of just become a curler. He's not really a football player anymore.

Yeah. My groins and hip flexor will be screaming. Oh, yeah. I'm actually stretch those out.

Dreading looking at what this is going to feel like today. I've I've had bilateral sports hernia. I am notoriously not very

He's coming out with excuses so that when it doesn't when it doesn't go great, he has an excuse lined up. I've never been a good stretcher. Never been A GOOD STRETCHER. SO, WE'RE talking world class athletes. We're talking Olympians. I got somebody from my gold medal team from 2018, Matt Hamilton, and his sister, Becca.

As the unofficial ambassadors for mixed doubles for uh the United States, we want to introduce you and welcome you to the mixed doubles community with some unis.

Oh my god. Make sure you guys serious. This is very exciting. It's just like ours. We both have Hamilton on our back. You guys both get Kelsey. It's awesome. Perfect.

This is very exciting. We have been studying you guys for quite some years now, but we're going to get a little bit more in depth today. So, we're excited.

All right. I'm ready for it. Queen Emma knows I love a montage. So, let's go put these things on and get to work.

Sure thing. Heat. Heat. All right, Matt. Becca, I already told Tyler this. I was briefly telling Becca just a minute ago. You've got a D3 field hockey player and an NFL center here. Uh

former so well yes for I'm sorry former NFL center of the couch now. Good job. Uh we need help. So can you give us some pointers please?

Of course. So we'll just go through the basics of it first. Okay. So you get in the hack, right? You'll have a target. Now, whether it's your teammate holding it or you're just having to visualize it.

Yeah. Just like in most sports, you want to square your hips. So, if I'm sliding that way, I'm going to square my whole body like this.

Yep. Drop down into the hack, right? Oh my gosh. Hand me a rock. Good luck. So, you're in the hack like this, right? I'm square to my target. Give it a little forward press towards your target. Lift your hips back and then out you go. Oh, that's impressive.

So smooth. It's elegant. It's like a swan. Like a swan. That's exactly what I'm thinking when I'm out there, baby.

Elegant. That's nothing. So, here's the two rock slide. You can put a little weight on them. Makes it a little bit easier

to start. So, you just have one in each hand and fall into the rock. Yeah. So, I'm going to say do as I say, not as I do because my slide that I just showed you first was not like how I would actually play. Okay, that was how you're going to try and do it. This foot's flat. I get way up on my toe.

You're in the front of your You're sliding on your toe. I'll show you my real slide here. Tuck slide.

It's called a tuck. Get them moving. Yep. See this foot? Oh, okay. You don't have to go on your tip toe.

So, what why do you go on the toe? What is that? What advantage does going on the toe provide?

It's one of those things. It's just like golf. There's no pictures on a scorecard. However you can get the ball to the hole is the right move.

And that's just the way you feel comfortable. That's what feels most comfortable with me. I bring my heel all the way up to my hip.

So you're almost balancing on your heel while you're going. Yeah. I'm literally on my heel and all my weight's going down through that heel to my toe.

Wow. Now Becca is a flat foot slider, which is more what you're going to do. Becca, give us a

flat foot. Let's see the flat foot in her cool shoes in her. Okay. I said cool because I'm siding with you. Bunch of penny loafers.

See how she's flat foot? That's what you guys want to emulate. All right. Uh Matt, you have somewhere you need to be.

Practice starts soon. So, I've left you in some very capable hands. Perfect. I mean, I I would prefer to be here and teach you, but I think my little sister can handle it. So,

Becca, don't do anything I wouldn't do. I taught him everything he does anyway.

Good luck, man. All right. I'll be back. Sounds good. Have fun. Good luck. Thank you.

When you do fall, cuz it will you will slip and fall. Great. Perfect. Just roll into it.

Yeah. Cuz trying to fight it, it's how you're going to hurt yourself. Just literally embrace it. Just eat it.

You're already so low to the ground, it's not going to hurt. Perfect. Okay. Yeah, it doesn't hurt when you're this low.

Okay. All right. All right. You always want to step in the hat first because that's going to be your griber foot, right?

Maybe step back a little further. You want your toe kind of at the top here. Here.

Oh, yeah. All the way up there. How you going to get all your momentum off? Got it.

This is so This is going to not This will BE GOOD. OH MY GOD. OKAY. I knew they were heavy. They're 42 lbs.

I know. When I just went to move them, I was like, "Oh." Oh, okay. So, you're going to go remember that little push forward.

I got the best view in the house. And then you're going to try to get that slider

in front of Oh, they really do stick after a second. Yep. Okay. And I want to put the slider directly underneath your back.

Oh my god. Here. Yep. Lean the way. This seems sketchy. And then this foot is going to extend back.

Yep. And toe touch basically. Yeah. Okay. Seems bad. This seems bad. This seems bad.

Now hold it. Hold it. Very good. Oh wow. And then there you go. Yeah. Very slippery. That is very slippery.

I can see it. Okay. You made it look easy. Well, okay. By easy, I mean easier than I

think it's going to be. Okay. Oh, get these hip flexors turn. This is the important one.

Oh my gosh. He thinks this is an audition. I want to be clear about that. He thinks he's auditioning here.

Oh my gosh. He's convinced that if he nails this, they're going to notoriously horrible quad. All right, here we go.

All right, so step in the hack first. Hack first. Get grounded. All right, what am I doing here again? Okay, so

Oh, come on. Hips on hips. Yep. Wow. Oh, and one and then side. Oh my gosh, this is going to be terrible.

Don't let go of the rock. Perfect. Oh, the two stone definitely helps. Straighten out the back foot a little bit.

Straighten it out. Like put your toe flat. See what I mean? Like a little There you go. Yeah.

All right. All right. Perfect. Couldn't even kneel down. He couldn't even kneel. You just put up the slider.

It's definitely There's a lot of drifting going on on that slider. Should we do the one stone now?

We can. Yep. This is a stabilizer. Okay. So, you can graduate to a broom after that.

Okay. And is it going this way or this way? That way. Yep. Just like that. So you're

you want to offset your weight. So Yep. Put weight on there if you need to. Majority of your weight should be on the center of your body.

Sure. On that slider foot. And the slider foot wants to end up here. Really centered.

Yep. Okay. And you have to release the rock if you're feeling good about it before that red line.

Okay. My instinct is to also rock this. Oh, that was sketchier. You don't have to let go.

That was sketchier. That was sketchier. That was good, though. That was good. Do you want the

Do you want the stabilizer? No. Broom. I'm going to fall. I'll be all right. I'll So, do you guys use a broom while you're doing it?

Yep. You want to flip that broom over so that smooth side's down? Yep. Step in the hack first. Oh yeah, hack first.

Oh, I thought he was going to do it. That was pretty good. Perfect. I feel like I'm I'm getting closer.

You are getting closer. Oh no. She threw it too. Stayed up. Yeah. No, I'm fine. My ego's a little bruised, but I did call it.

You did. I did say the broom was going to be my way down. I didn't think it was going to go that far.

Should I go again? Try again. Maybe. Okay. Please feel free to play that back in slow motion when my knees go out like a baby giraffe. I released very early cuz that is sketchy as hell. That was good. That was good. Okay. He's breathing heavy. He's warmed up so hard he's breathing heavy.

All right. Come on. All right. So, I want to be centered. He's getting so small.

Should I release it? You can if if you're feeling comfortable. Before the red line, though.

Let me get centered. There we go. Now I'm centered. Oh, good. That was pretty good.

It's not going to make it, is it? It's over. Yep. It's curling. Settle. Settle.

Close. If it hits the side, it doesn't guard. That's a corner guard. I got I was not trying to do that. I was trying to put a guard up.

Nice, Jay. You did it. That was good. Let's go, baby. That was good. We're on the board. See, the crazy part is is the last two times I went, my brain didn't even think like, "Oh, let's see where it goes." It literally my brain was like, "Don't eat [ __ ] Don't eat [ __ ] Don't eat [ __ ] Don't eat shit." And then I ate [ __ ] So, let's see how it goes when I think about it.

Watch. I'm going to eat [ __ ] cuz I'm not focusing on not eating [ __ ] Give a little push if you want. That was really good.

A push. Push. I forgot to let go. I know. I know. When you said push, I was like with my foot.

Okay, I'm going to release it this time. All right, that was smoother. That was very smooth. That's why I thought you were going to let go.

Becca was like, "You did everything but curl." So, let's do that. All right. That's so hard.

There we go. It's going bumper rail. She gone. Technically bounce off the sides but

nobody saw it. Yeah. Perfect. Love that. All right, Jason, Kylie, great start. You guys look good. Very impressed with what you're doing so far. We're going to kick things up another notch cuz we have a current Olympian on his way to Cortina. And Jay, you and I are both doing the broadcast thing now. Let's hear that big gravitas intro for our next guy coming out.

He's a WORLD CHAMPION REPRESENTING THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DUTH. A THREETIME US MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPION, A TWO-TIME US MEN'S CURLING CHAMPION, AND HE'S OFFICIALLY A MEMBER OF THE 2026 US OLYMPIC CURLING TEAM COMPETING AT THE MILAN CORTINA WINTER OLYMPICS. PLEASE WELCOME MR. CORY DROPK.

Hey guys, what's going on? Thank you so much for joining us. Exciting. Congratulations. Thank you very much.

I think we're going to lean into some sweeping now. Sweeping. Okay. Something that I'm notoriously bad at.

Can confirm. But hopefully I'm better on the Maybe. Maybe this is the moment. Yeah.

And then I'll bring those skills home. All right. So, the reason why we sweep, first of all, is we're sweeping the pebble on the ice to try to one melt the surface a little bit to reduce the friction. It helps the curling stone glide further.

Okay? But also, we can manipulate the direction of the rock. So, we can hold the rock straighter or we can also make it curl more depending on how we sweep. But in general, when we're sweeping, we want to split the broom into thirds and then you can kind of shift from there, whatever's comfortable.

We're trying to lean as much of our weight onto the broom. Okay? And sweeping the distance essentially the width of the broom of the running surface of the stone. And then with that, we'll need to include some movement down the ice.

Yes. So, we got to be careful. Ice is slippery. So, what we're going to do is create a little bit of movement. What I like to see is one foot always under your body and one foot outside. What that does is it

helps you put more weight on the broom. Yes. Less weight on your feet. The more weight you have on your feet,

the more of your body now is not on the broom. Yes. So, tilting a little bit, shift that weight on the broom.

And then try to glide down the ice. So, you're switching Yep. Good. Yeah. Now you got it.

That's pretty good. That's pretty good. Good. Almost lost it. You're not curling unless you take one spill.

Now, let's put our sweeping effort into actually sweeping a rock. Okay. I think he's ready.

So, he's sweeping. cuz that makes one of us. Okay, let's get a good throw here, Kai.

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Let's just decide that. Keep in mind, he is sweeping for you. You get to say those words. He's sweeping.

Fix it for you. You've been waiting for this. There you go. Come on, Jay. Catch up there.

Sweep, Jason. The way he just joged was honestly Impressive. Get going back in there.

Not bad. Come on. You know what? You got the effort. You got the effort. Did you kill it?

That's about all I had. That was that that He killed it. I was going to go further. He got around it. It's just

The technique went out the window. You got a breath little bit. All right. You're throwing it now. I'm going to move closer to the hog line though because um he had to do a slight jog

and I can guarantee you if I have to pick up the pace at all I am going to eat it.

Just I'm going to go down here. That's a good stroke. Okay. Okay. I feel good about this.

You're going to be a good sweeper. I hope so. And release. Push. Oh, that's good. It's a good one.

Oh no. Catch up. Oh no. Oh no. I DON'T GOT TO GO GET THERE. WE DON'T NEED IT. Come on. We need to turn it.

I'm not running. Put the brakes on. Now it's out of play. I stayed up with that more than I thought I was going to.

Okay. See, it didn't even need us. No. So that's out of play now. Okay. I look great.

To be fair, Cory and I were strategizing before that. I said, "Obviously, I'm not trying to go directional. I'm just trying to give it a little more life, right?" And he said, "Yes." So, I didn't have to.

You did exactly what you're supposed to do. You couldn't do anything sweeping it. Thank you so much.

Yeah, that was a perfect sweep. All right. Here we go. All right. All right. Oh god.

Really psyches me out. He He does a lot of pump face. A lot of pump. Oh, that's pretty good. Pretty good there.

Okay. Okay. Okay. You want to sweep that one? Come on. WE NEED SOME SWEEPING. Get over the line.

Oh, it's definitely not going to go. We need points. It's your fault. I'm blaming you. It was a good effort.

Thank you for putting it slower so that I could at least get ahead of it. We cannot wait to cheer you on, you and your teammates on in the Winter Olympics this year. Go USA.

Yeah. Thank you so much. It's so great to see you on the ice. Appreciate you coming out and making the time for us.

No, absolutely. Thank you. We're trying. Congratulations. First Olympics right?

First Olympics. How's it feel? Amazing. Dream come true. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I've been dreaming of this day for a long time.

Well, good luck. We're cheering you on step in the right direction. So, yes, absolutely.

All right. Um Matt is back from practice, so he is going to now come in and he is going to judge what we've learned.

Oh gosh. Yep. Let's do it. Matt and Becca, we are going to do our final curls. Deliveries.

Deliveries. Thank you. We're going to do our final deliveries. Look at us. We're constantly learning. Uh, and you guys are going to judge how we have applied what we've learned here today.

Okay. All right. And you do have to deem a winner. Winner. Okay. I love that. Yep. I feel strongly about that. And I know it's not going to be me.

Am I sweeping for you on this? We're going to We're going to decide who's going. We're both doing one of these.

We are sweeping. Yep. Yep. All right. All right. Okay. All right. and curling. Sometimes instead of flipping a coin to decide who goes first, we'll play odd or even numbers on the stopwatch. So, I just started it.

Love that. Just stopped it. I'll let you pick odd or even. Odd. 250. That's even.

Even. I get to choose. Choose. Choose. You get to choose. I want second. I want to see this.

He's going to knock me. Yeah, that's right. Okay. Um I want the hammer. I promise to sweep to the best of my ability.

I believe in you. Well, we're judging sweeping, too. All right, here we go. Okay,

you got this, guy. Little ad. Oh, good job. Oh, okay. Okay. I don't think I need to sweep too much.

You got to sweep it. Got to sweep it. Better with that already. Oh, good. All right. Careful. Have foam now.

Foam behind you. Foam. All right. All right. Nobody saw that. If it touches a side, does that count?

Well, if he hadn't swept it, it wouldn't have gotten the boards, right? Yeah. Fair.

There you go. All right. Sweet 10. Here we go. Kelsey in the hack. Game on the line. Can he come through once again for Team USA?

That's got promise. I think that needs a little sweep, THOUGH. COME ON, KAI. I NEED TO

OH, get to the house. THE FROST HAS GOT ME IN THE RINGS. GET IT IN THE HOUSE. IT'S ALMOST THERE.

THAT'S pretty good, man. Pretty good, though. Pretty good. That was nice. So good.

Good team work, Jay. That was very good. That was great. I mean, it looked like you were putting SOME PRETTY GOOD PRESSURE ON IT, THOUGH. I WAS

I TRIED MY BEST. I it did start to like you can feel the burn a little bit. Not in a bad way, but like in a like I'm activating, you know?

Yeah, absolutely. Matt and Becca, you guys have to help us answer the question. We're here to find out whether or not a former field hockey player and a former NFL center can curl. What do you think the answer is?

Um, yeah. No, I mean I'm gonna be honest. Yeah, we've tra we've showed some cur people like new players how to curl before and your athleticism definitely carries over. Like your slides looked way better than your average first timer.

Okay, so we'll give you credit there. Uh I did have a tip, Jason. Uh maybe next time Kylie lines up behind you and gives you a little tush push. I know you're a little more comfortable as a Philly guy.

Is that too soon? Made me feel very at home. Yeah. The problem is Kylie, you can't move too soon. That false star they might call it. Eventually they'll call that one.

That's right. Yeah, that's fair. Okay, so if we had to pick, we can split it up. We can split it up to the

shooting. Shooting and the sweeping. Who's got it? All right. Well, Jason kept his in play.

He did. And I thought that was a mark of a better shooter. Now, that said, Jason swept yours until it hit the foam, which is the mark of a bad sweeper. He didn't have very good spatial awareness on the ice. So, I'm going to give you the sweeping crown because you kept it in play. You got a nice little guard out there.

And Jason, your throw very nice. It was a great delivery with that shooting. Yeah, I think you guys I think you guys

I want to do it more. I I'm like I think I got the bug. Love it. Thank you guys so much. Thank you guys for coming out.

You you let us um you let us [ __ ] around on the ice and we found out for sure.

42lb stones, hurling them at our opposing countries with fury as we take out our national pride against these other nations of lesser talent.
