This is Powderham Castle in Southwest England, home to the 19th Earl of Devon, who actually goes by Charlie. He holds a seat in the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament, and he inherited that seat by a male bloodline that goes back more than 900 years. Out of more than 800 seats in the House of Lords, most of which are appointed by the government, more than 90 of them are reserved for these hereditary peers. They're all white men with an average age of around 70. This Palace of Westminster behind me is where Charlie and more than 800 other Lords come to work, at least for now. But the government wants to eliminate their hereditary seats. This actually began in the early 20th century when the Lords lost their power to veto budget legislation. Some hereditary seats were then phased out in the 1990s. Now, a bill to eliminate them altogether is expected to pass parliament this winter.

Some of the hereditary lords may actually vote themselves out of power for the first time in more than a thousand
