What this episode is about

Victor Wembanyama advocates for increased effort in the NBA All-Star Game, urging established players to match his intensity; he believes that a foreign-born mentality and work ethic, exemplified by stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic, can help elevate the game's competitiveness. The discussion also touches on the effectiveness of platforms like Prize Picks for sports fans looking to engage with games while earning rewards.

Key takeaways

  • Wembanyama's ambition: can one foreign star reignite the fading competitive spirit of the NBA All-Star Game?
  • American stars might need a 'foreign-born heart' infusion; complacency could cost them the edge in every matchup.
  • LeBron's legacy seems double-edged: is he the reason behind the All-Star apathy or just a product of it?
  • With less at stake, why risk injury? The All-Star Game has become a music festival in sneakers—not a competition.
  • The financial stakes are sky-high, but has loyalty fallen flat? Players prioritize contracts over pride in today's NBA.

Uh, Victor Wimyama had a quote saying, "I want to push the great players of this sport to play in the All-Star game just as hard as I will. We'll see how it goes, but if they don't play hard, I'll do it without them." Do you guys like Wimy's approach towards the All-Star game in these comments? I got some important information for y'all. There's no better place to win cash while watching sports than prize picks. Football season is here and basketball season is here, so there's absolutely no better time to join. It's super easy to use. To create a lineup, all you got to do, select a few player stats, pick more or less. That's literally it. Prize Picks is available in more than 40 states, including California, Texas, my home state, and Georgia. But my favorite thing, Prize Picks is going to give you $50 in lineups when you make your first $5 lineup. What's that mean? Win or lose, you get 50 bucks in lineups for

free. Just download the app and use promo code speak easy today. Five bucks. gets you 50 bucks in lineups. Prize picks. It's good to be right. Love it. Because what American players need is a little foreignb born heart.

Let's be real. The foreignb born players are the best in basketball right now. Nicolic, Jiannis Takmpo, Victor Wmanyama, Luca Donuch by talent obviously like what the Americanborn players need is a little foreignb born heart. Period. And Victor Womenyama, I wish Shady was in here because he'd be jumping out of seat when I say this. Victor Womenyama is trying to bring some of that tenacity, trying to bring some of that heart, trying to bring some of that work ethic, trying to bring some of that dog, trying to bring some of that I'm not too cool for school mentality back into the game of basketball that what what Giannis has, what Jokic has, which has led them to dominating MVPs for the last several years. Like they need some of that foreignb born mentality and some of that foreignb born heart. The question to can he actually accomplish it? I don't know cuz he's one man and all-star teams are talking about

27 28 man. But that I love his mentality. If you can get everybody on board cuz you can be the only guy out there playing hard and if everybody don't want to play hard, you going to be one of nine. I mean one of 10.

And Anthony Edwards has actually come out and said he want [snorts] to go hard cuz it's it's for the fans. it once you get cuz it's going to be the world versus US, right?

If you can get SGAA, Wimby and them boys playing hard in the US is just kind of messing around like it's whatever.

Oh, they going to turn it up. You're not just going to punch me in my mouth and not get punched back. They not just gonna keep playing the way they they gonna eventually say, "Okay, we about to play now."

That that's what's going to happen. And so if if he does start to play that way and the other players at SGA, I don't believe Joic will play in the Lucas and they really turn it up. Oh, they going to get it back.

Yeah. And now now you got something and then okay, this is what the NBA has wanted. But at some point, any injury happen, it's going to go back. And and I think that's why they play the way they play because nobody wants to risk getting hurt over a meaningless game.

But see, I don't even know if that's it, T, because there wasn't an injury that was a catalyst for the All-Star game turning into trash. There were like there was no monumental injury that said that. Furthermore, it's not like it's the NFL where you really out there smacking. I think it is shameful that this 21-year-old French kid is having to come into an American sport and change an American sport.

But it is it is boring though. It's a lot of dunks and threes. It's boring. And so if they can accomplish this, if he can, I'm okay.

You know what a lot of people the downfall Allstar game too? What's that? LeBron ducking the smoke from Kobe. What you mean break that down when they Yeah, I seen that when Kevin Garnett said that

when they when they went Yeah. when they went headtohead and Kobe was like, you know, come on, let's let's have let's have a one-on-one and LeBron was kind and they said from there like if they had done that,

you got these two Titans and if they actually like, okay, ball up the court, my turn, ball up the court, my turn, and actually duped it out, it would have kept the competitiveness of the of the All-Star game. But, uh, you know, they say LeBron pretty much duck the face. So, was the was the All-Star game competitive? I I've seen Allstar game footage from the '90s and it wasn't competitive. I

early 2000s. It was hella competitive. Early it was the last competitive All-Star game I witnessed was 2021 cuz they had the the the different 80 ended on the free free throw one. But like still I I think also people blame LeBron James for for too many Allstar thing. Apparently LeBron James ruined the dunk contest cuz he didn't want to do it. But nobody acknowledges the fact that D Wayen is probably didn't want to do it either. and D. Way was just as exciting at that time. But it is what it is.

I think the All-Star game, it's it's it's hard for these players without a financial incentive to go out there and just play hard for the love of the game anymore. They're making too much money, bro. I'm sorry. It's the same way college football is completely different now. I'm sorry. I'm making too much money to think that I'm just going to sit here and be loyal and take $300,000, $300,000 less dollars to just stay here and be a damn Ohio State Buckeye. No, I want to play. I want to go do these other things. These these NBA players, bro, I'm not going to go hard and and and and risk injury that might mess up my season, me, mess up uh real opportunities that I have to go make this paper. At the end of the day, but to me, that is on LeBron. And it's not on LeBron today.

I think it's on LeBron over the last 12 years because you follow the leader, bro. We've all watched the document uh the doc. Y'all remember the redeem team,

right? Autumn Cats, Melo, Braun, Wade, they said they were coming into Vegas from a night out and Kobe was leaving to go to the gym. And they said, "Yeah, we ain't go out again after that." And we started waking up at 5:00 a.m. to go with Kobe. And Kobe didn't force them to come. They just saw Kobe going there to the gym and they said, "You know what? Let me change my behavior." So, I do believe you follow the alphas. You follow the best players. If you're a young allstar, if LeBron is out there playing hard, you know what the hell you going to do? You going to play hard because the veteran all-star is out there playing hard. But I think LeBron dictates the culture has dictated the culture of the game. So I can't wash LeBron from from I can't make him immune to what the All-Star game has turned into.

I think he's in large part responsible. [sighs and gasps] I think the format is not enough. I think that's really what it is. In in in baseball, we had an all-star game that that people cared about because the winner of it would get homefield advantage in the World Series.

If you got to do something like that, if it means that much to have the Allar game,

it's hard not to play hard in baseball. It's hard not to like you have you're going to swing for the fences.

Yeah. I can't just lob this thing up. He might send a 115 mph missile right back in my head. Like I I have to be able to like really pitch. But if what AO said is true, then it's about to change again because Wimby is going to be the next star of the NBA. He wants it to change. So if it's true what you just said about Lamar, the star kind of dictates on how we play.

Wimby is saying we need to change this. Ant kind of want. So those two guys can change it here in the next couple years. Really? But T, I think it's true with anything like you could share stories of if you had young buck wide receivers, right? And tell me a receiver you d y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y y'all drafted when you and Chad was there.

We drafted Chris Henry. Bet. Um when Chris shows up, right? I'm sure if y'all are work if y'all like, "Hey, Chris, we catching after practice."

Oh, they're going to follow the lead. He's catching after practice. You're always going to follow the leaders or the best players on

Correct. And if it's like, "Hey, Chris, we going to the club after practice." He going to the club after practice.

Yeah. You're always going to follow. Yes. So like at the end of the day and that's that's it that I'm not saying it all is but I'm saying like you legitimately you follow the leader especially bro if it's your first or second time at the Allstar game and you you just trying to fit in.

You're trying to see how you trying to like hey what what we doing and you don't want to be the guy that goes too hard

cuz now you're an outcast or you're ostracized. So and so and you but you don't want to be the guy that goes too soft if everybody going hard cuz now you get the you're the outcast and you're ostracized.

You know what I think people are going to be like dang he's playing really hard. I'm chilling. Like at the end of the day,

WB is not enough. I like what T said though. If it's WBY and his aunt because when when Yiannis is there and Yokic is there and like that's for and Shay

like if it's like it's it's got to be a slow See, this is this is my thing though. What What do y'all want the All-Star game to be?

Yeah. What do y'all want it to be? Do y'all want it to be like cuz the dream scenario is yo, who's got the better players, the Eastern Conference or the Western Conference? let them go out there and play their ass off to to see who's the best in the conference. That's not something that these players are going to give a give a about. I'm sorry. They don't care. THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT A FAN PERSPECTIVE ABOUT the game and who's what conference HAS BETTER PLAYERS. I'LL SHOW IT WITH MY TEAM IN the playoffs.

I DON'T CARE ABOUT THESE THREE days that I have with all these other dudes around the league and I'm going to show you AND LIKE WHAT'S YOUR

KAREN? Here's my problem. G, do you hear yourself? Not you that you're giving a bad take. I want that. It's a shame that you have to give that take

like like how is how do we how do players not care about what conference has the better players

cuz they make $200 million to play basketball. Why would I care? There's no incentive for me to care.

And I'll take it a step further and say not only is there not an incentive to play, there's incentives not to play.

Yes. which would be number one injury. Yes. The minute somebody goes out and gets injured in an exhibition game that means next to nothing and now that they can't compete in the playoffs

and they can't help their team get though because the game has played at such a low and slow pace level. So yeah, they're not going to get hurt if they but that's a luxury that you know to bring it back to the baseball conversation.

They have that luxury because it is a non-cont sport. So they don't have to worry about if I got to go out and do the same thing that I've been doing all season these other 115 games or whatever we're playing in the season, I can do that because I'm I'm my risk of injury is not any higher in the All-Star game for the baseball as it is during the regular season. You know what I mean? In the NBA, there's a lot more at stake for much less reward. I can still get injured the same way.

But let me let me put a pause on that because there's not a reward for playing one NBA game. There's rewards for playing the 82. There's rewards for playing 10. Rewards for playing 20. But one NBA game isn't going to make or break any team season until we get to the playin games or maybe the last five, 10 games of the season. But you play in every individual NBA game cuz it's an NBA game. But that one game is irrelevant. So eventually, uh, Social Trey, your your your your philosophy just falls to shreds because like one game doesn't change anything, but players still play in games. That's true.

I got to I got to push back on that though because especially in the Western Conference, we've seen the the number one seated team and the number 10 seated team be a difference of three and a half, four games. And so one game, that load management game that you take or that game you ate some bad pizza in Utah and decided to, you know, still try to play whatever the case may be actually does make a difference. The All-Star game just doesn't have that same impact. The the money's going to charity. Even with the NBA Cup,

the your starters go out there and they're like, I know my homie 10th on the bench can use this $500,000, so I'm going to go out and play for something. In the All-Star game, he's not there. Number 10 on the bench is is at home watching like the rest of us. the NBA Cup is a regular season game. It matters for your record. Even from from from the very first round to the championship, that's on your record. So, uh, to me, it's it's there there's my problem is gosh, we can we can sit here and complain about the game. What's the fix?

Like, what are we going to do? Like, if if you really want them to go out there and compete, incentivize it, league like like put a million up on the line for for whoever wins MVP. Make it have different

too much money. If you making 50 50 million a year, 30 million a year, that million dollars, you like

I'll tell you something different though. Why in 2020 did we have the structure that we did with the four different quarters that that were and then and every and they played hard and it was fun and it was it was probably the most exciting All-Star game that I've witnessed in the past 15 years,

bro. Facts. And why did we just go away from that? I mean, well, it was stupid. It was confusing.

Just playing to this score. Yeah, that was dumb. Like why are we have to This is what I hate about this generation of athletes and lowkey this generation of humans.

Like why do we got to change everything? Cuz we care about health. So soft. We care about health more.

No, it's not about health. Nobody got hurt in the game, bro. I think No, I think NFL players with padding on their helmets now.

You can't you can't hit people up high. You can't hit people too low. You can't But like it we care more about the health of the athletes than we did 20 years ago. Sorry. In TJ's era, you could WHAT? WHAT DID MIKE IRVIN SAY? I PLAYED IN THE ERA WHERE YOU COULD KNOCK [screaming] OUT.

YEAH. YEAH. And it's like scrambled eggs. But the what? You're you're you'reating two different things practice.

You're confl Kieran. You're conflating like TJ had A BROKEN BACK. SPINAL SPINAL SPINAL. SPINAL. Literally

my hurting right now. See what I'm saying? Had a broken back and they was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. Get your ass back out there."

Yeah. Get your ass back out there. Even if they had told TJ, "Uh-uh, no, you stay on the side." And TJ like, "Oh, no. I'm going back on the field." And the athlete is like,

"But it's going to take one thing. The best players are going to be the only ones to change it. Money,

the league, the best players are going to be the only ones that can change it."

Yeah. Is that is that or pride? Or you go into like a one v one cuz then you're not going to get embarrassed.

So this this this is something I brought up as well, right? So, even with the young guys coming in the league, you would think, "Yo, I grew up playing 2K. I'd be so excited to to go out there and compete in the three-point contest, the dunk contest, uh, playing the All-Star game." VJ Edgecom got asked, he's a rookie, by the way, if he would he would participate in the slam dunk contest. Take a listen to what he had to say.

In the spirit of Tyrese being an all-star starter, if somebody asked you if you wanted to be in the dunk contest, what would your response be?

No. Yeah, I ain't doing it. Is there was there a particular reason why you wouldn't want to participate?

No. Nah, I'm good. I'm good. Nobody wants to do those things like like for and the dunk contest is something separate, but there has to be reform if we want people to care cuz at the end of the day, if the players don't care on this certain,

don't want to lose. They don't want to lose. But you know what else you know what else it is though? And I and I I hate this about society sometimes. We've made it cool to say no. That's why I go back to the LeBron. If you want to blame it on DW, that's fine, too. Though DW does not have the same cultural influence that the LeBron James has or basketball influence, but like we made it cool to say no. We've made it cool to be like, "Yeah, they ass, but I ain't want to go. I ain't trying to do all that." Like, that's not It used to be cool to say yes.

Do you think if they said the All-Star game we was going to put a format of a one v one, winner or get

now? Dang. X amount. One v one. And and and you're only playing to seven. You only play to seven.

Two dribble two dribble max. You only play to seven. You only play to seven. One v one. I'd probably have to be four to five dribble max.

N that's a lot for NBA guys. Two. Three. Yeah. But yeah, you can do three dribble max.

Three dribble. Yeah, I say three. Shot clock or just go like a 10sec shot clock

or just like a call them out segment. We seen we seen LeBron. Yeah. Pride kicks in there.

Dingo. Pride kicks in. Ding, ding, ding. Pride kicks in and it's a random draw. You do a random draw.

So aka, oh, why you got me playing him? Why I got to play KD the first round? Yeah.

Random draw. One v one. Tacho's point though. I'm agreeing with this dog. Everybody would tune in. Everybody would tune in. Who would sign up to do it though?

Yeah. If you're an all-star, you got to play. Yeah. If you're an all-star, you got to play.

They would. And it's random. One v one. Risk of like risk of injury is low injury. The risk of pride is very, very high. going to play.

They wouldn't try hard enough. Somebody would. And you only play the seven so you can do multiple rounds.

The thing is somebody would, but they just give it to them. They'd be like, "All right, cool. You got it."

No, I think See, Kieran, you're underestimating the pride, man. Pride of the elites. You are underestimon

No, no, I know who wouldn't. Giannis wouldn't. Giannis sure as hell. Giannis playing like he got to get free again from Nigeria. Giannis ain't doing be honest.

All right, that's that's the I mean, listen y that's okay, folks. So, I mean, you can say that, but I can't cosign

it. Put bro, put put the money up, bro. Put the money up. League, put the money up. If you want to fix it, put the money up, cuz that's the only thing that these guys are really going to go out there and play.

So, where would you put the money? Allar MVP gets 5 million. What What would it be?

You do that. I guarantee you they play a whole lot harder. But then you get to like if it's just MVP, they get shot.

You getting MVP, everybody shooting. Ain't nobody passing that thing. Thanks. Yeah. I think every winning team player 250 quarter

or you say the winning team if you hold the losing team under this amount of points cuz now everybody going to play defense.

Yeah, cuz that's what it is. It's a lack of effort. So let's Okay, what was it last year? It was like 160 something or whatever.

So stupid. Hold them under 120. Winning a team. Each player will get whatever they'll play. Well, the thing is you'll see guys play hard

because you you get that extra million, two million. I watch I watch Russell Westbrook and Damian, your wife, your sister, whoever. Yeah,

you going to play for that
