What this episode is about
The discussion focuses on a table reading of the second draft of the film script for "Interview with the Vampire," highlighting differences from the final version. It also addresses the use of a historically derogatory term in the script, emphasizing the importance of awareness and sensitivity in language.
Key takeaways
- Even in the 90s, addressing outdated racial terms was crucial; language evolves, but history clings on.
- Anne Rice's 1820s vampire world emphasizes moral ambiguity—where's the line between monster and misunderstood?
- The initial script of 'Interview with the Vampire' highlights character depth; what’s scripted often unveils more than dialogues.
- The faded glam of punk bars in ’90s adaptations contrasts sharply with classic gothic horror—imagine the vibes!
- As we analyze adaptations, remember: every draft tells a different story—sometimes, the scars of history remain.

let me know when we're live we are Live on YouTube all right I see welcome now so I don't get messes to our reading of Interview with the Vampire let me go ahead and get our um recording going on here too and know when we're live we are Live on YouTube did I not close it some double vision here one oh boy I'm hearing it very surreal to close the window too slow closing it so okay now we should be good all right uh Interview with the Vampire by Ann rice we're going to be reading the second draft of the film script so don't be fooled by my background there which I guess is from the television episodes um and so there's some key differences out here from the script uh this draft of the script from the final production of the movie so it should be interesting to see um we'll get some introductions going here in just a sec um before I forget um I do want to mention that this script was written in
1992 and you will see across a word that is currently considered to be a racial um slur or derogatory um and that word is a quadron which um you'll see it's reference it's a reference for someone who is one quarter Black by descent um we don't use that word very much anymore but and I don't think we'll have to say it during the film but we will see it across the screen so I wanted to you know call your attention to it so that uh we know that we we can't change the way the script is written but we can change what we say and do about it so right I didn't even know that that was a that was a slur um yeah I've hadn't heard it for actually hadn't heard it ever and had I had to look it up it meant but yeah it's from what I read online it said that it's not used anymore because it's ter it's just not not probably was a term back in the and much yeah and it probably was in the in the in the 1700s 1800s
yeah so we'll see takes place 1823 I think sometime in the 1800s yeah before the americ yeah it's like 18 want to say 1823 1824 I could go check yeah and of course it goes back further in time too and then ahead in time as well so we'll see several different time periods in this film um in the script reading but before without any further Ado we're going to do introduction so if you can let our audience know your name your pronouns where you're at who you're playing um and where they can find you online if they were so interested interested um I'll go and start with Aubrey hi everyone I am Aubrey McCoy uh my pronouns are don't care um and I'm from California and I am playing the titular list so uh yeah that's generally what I'm playing I think I may have some extra descriptions I don't know I didn't get a chance to check the the guest because you know I'm L that what what do we care you can find me at Lucian the
fair and um on Instagram and on AUB Facebook M around on YouTube you can just look up my name you'll find me all right and you are just a not today except for one of those few couple few lines as the congregation which we'll show up later oh fantastic yes um so we'll see you in church all right um Vicki I won't explode I swear hello I'm Vicky Dykes my pronouns are she her I am in central Alberta and tonight I am going to be Claudia and I will be doing actions and descriptions in the first second and third part and I have a small character Teresa she only has four lines all right um oh and where you can find me I am on um Facebook I Vicky dkes and I'm on Instagram I'm yoga grma 10 cool um on to Jackson hello I am Jackson gray you can find me on most social medias with that name I'm playing Louie today and a ton of little roles um yeah I think oh and I'm in central Alberta and just yeah I think that's
everything okay and you've also got Gabrielle which is yes gabri when she shows up um and then I am cat Wilson I am in gek Washington my pronouns are she her and tonight I'll be playing Malloy um Yeet and Armand as well as a few smaller characters and then picking up actions and descriptions um when Vicki drops out with then to to do her role as cladia um yep I think that's it so we're going to get our script on on the screen here and start our read we're going to just read the first half of it this evening so we'll stop around page 98 um because it's a really long script and there are lots and lots of actions and descriptions so more than actual dialogue I believe but it' be fun and we get to hear a lot of Vicky tonight so is that a good enough size on the screen for you all looks good that's fantastic that's okay there yeah okay very good SC then and back up here and Vicki when when you're ready Interview with the Vampire

you answer me she hurls the chanthony at lat's feet monstrous parents to give me immortality in this helpless guys this hopeless shape was as da as apprentices only I didn't know what had happened then it was you wasn't it you were the one Louie steps forward Claudia it is it was no simple thing I swear it mustat rushes out as he has done before the door bangs behind him did you do it did you it was theat you know it was you would never have done such a thing Louis is Patiently I want you to come with me and listen exterior old part of the city old pitch roof of French houses Mud Street Lou talks with clot as they walk slowly finally coming to a halt beneath a dim Gas Lamp the echo of Claudia's crying of years before it was an old days it was old days there there's this house of or perhaps it's that one I can tell you I can't tell you the plague was raging in the city I heard you crying
you were there in a room with your mom and she been dead for days you didn't know it you clung to her you begged me to help you I came into your room into the room I felt pity for you pity but something else you fed on me I was your victim yes I did it but you had a heart like no other heart I felt I ever felt I would stop I wouldn't stop then the stunt came he found me out he laughed at me Louie this uh sentimental one with a Holy Innocence in his arms I ran I ran from him from you you meant to kill me you left me for death yes the next night he found you in the hospital where they taken you I never knew what he meant to do but teach me my nature finish it he said Claudia backs away he grabs her wrist oh I knew I knew I've lost you you look at me now and you think you look at IM mortal Mortals from some cold shelf suffer s suffer suffer um I can't understand but the hunger that we all understood I felt it for you then iile
unsupportable hunger of hunger for your hammering heart for this for this Tre cheek this hair Claudia lets him touch her you were pink and soft as a mortal child are moral child children are sweet with the bite of salt and dust Claudia's face softens only a little I heard you again I took you and when I thought your heart would drag me down with it and I didn't care he parted us he cut his wrist he gave you the blood to drink and drank you did and you became one of us that night and drank blood from the first victim from your first victim and you have drank the blood of Mortals every night ever since he waits Claudia looks him unreadable it was it was I will it was I who took your life he gave it back to you and here it is and I hate you both and that is where we are going to pause for this evening we'll have to see what happens next week we get the second half of our show perf so good that was so much fun it was
so much fun I was so happy I got um got to play Lou well Louie was fun but also uh Gabriel Gabrielle gab gab playing her too they were both she was that was interesting that relationship her son and her um yeah especially some of the lines she had but I had so much fun with it um yeah in the vampire list that that it goes through all of that yeah there's it's a very interesting relationship between those two well yeah I was like huh okay I don't need no skirts anymore what is so funny is that so like all of that is actually cut out from the production of the movie itself like you don't get into any of that none of it sad I know actually they lad is so much more monstrous in like he's actually like quite sympathetic I mean he's still fun and like such an ass and such a poop I love him to pieces as you can tell but like he's a lot more sympathetic he's so much more of a sociopath and like a narcissistic
sociopath in the movie oh yeah it's perfect cuz Tom Cruz plays him so well like I mean you see bits of it you do see like under the surface it's all like it's all a show you get kind of the sense that he's putting on a show for Louie cuz Lou can't read his mind and Lou can't read the minds of others yeah but like yeah this makes him so much more like relatable for us it's kind of amazing but I hope you you could tell that I was really enjoying just I loved your accent too it was so thank you oh I had so much fun listening I had so much fun it's so much fun thank you see you can tell I was like I want to be l so muchad yeah it was yeah like how old's this movie now 1992 I believe oh it's like I don't know I see it as a very it seems very Progressive in the fact of it's like a two it's a dad dad relationship with their kid you know and they're really flirty to each other and so I'm like I mean yeah I'm
I'm actually I watch so I watched um I've watched four or five episodes of the new series and it is very blatant like here because of 1992 they had to make it all like implied oh but yeah even in the movie it's like oh it's the case of the not g I swear because in the yeah in the book it it's his brother is it it he he never had a wife and a child he had a brother he was I mean and he was much more pointedly bisexual oh and I'm just just spoilers every vampire in the vampire or in the vampire Chronicles is basically bisexual all of them uhuh that makes sense pretty much I think that fits perfectly bisexual or gay like there's so much queer there's so much queer like Spotlight in these books they're they're great yeah I could feel it while reading this Hollywood yeah and rice is also just a bit ancestros did Arman surprise you by the way of how young he actually is when he came in uh yeah it surprised me I read the
too I just totally missed that point the first time I read it through yeah he's only 15 he's only 15 I did not catch that arm yeah he's only 15 oh my and Lead is 21 yeah 24 maybe 21 no Lou is 24 was that when he was turned was 21 okay was Lise like the slave owner or was he okay I thought he was because but then it said someone else like why you letting this guy whip us the overseers so the plantation owners had overseers who watched after the the sles and the yeah that makes so much more sense I was like and they were often a lot more cruel than the the the slave owner itself not that slaver is okay I'm not saying that at all but that the point was is that all the slaves actually loved Louie because he was kind yeah Louie seems so sweet compared to like he's like I'm just like reading his L I was expecting this man to be more like upset or angry or more malicious no he's just this little guy who's learning to
be a vampire he doesn't want to kill anyone he just wants animals you know he's just I mean lat is kind of lat's like older and the way I always read lat is that he doesn't want to do it either but he makes it okay by killing evildoers that's how he does it and to him he's like yeah we should just kill evil people and they'll be fine yeah it's it's definitely interesting I'm like huh I've never seen vampires be taken this way so I am so glad you got this script this this one it's so different than the product but it's also so good I I wish this was the script we got like this was the movie we got in some ways I'm glad the movie did get but I I really like the way that this is It's always interesting to see how it changes from script to final product yeah yeah it's really fascinating like Gabrielle's not in the movie at all you don't hear any of this that's so sad she's so fun I mean still
a little awkward and I I still that whole learn hearing some of the lines I had to say today I was like oh this is not what a mom should be telling her son even the thing of don't bring the mom thing into this we don't care for those mortal words anymore I was like it's still yeah I was like you know it feels a little predatory even in the book it's a bit more like Gabriel's much more predatory okay she seemed very predatory already yeah so no no I mean like they didn't they didn't shy away from any of that pred predator of it which I actually like like it's a little more subtle but it's not nearly lad doesn't realize it but his mother is definitely more narcissistic and she sees L as an extension of herself and you definitely see that I mean that's what I got from the reading of the script too I could see that a little bit I feel so bad for St oh sucks who who do you feel bad for I'm sorry oh God yeah poor Claudia
she's just like trying to live and then her hair goes back I thought they were just going to say her hair will never grow back and that's why you don't want to cut your hair no it just comes back I'm like that's even worse I find oh imagine that lat and Lou also have to do that because they have to trim their hair so it matches the style of the times every night too but they that's why that's why Lisa's like you didn't tell her yeah wow it's yeah that end scene was so sad I was like I feel so bad and Lou does it's get more sad oh it's gonna get more it's gonna get worse get more sad the st's just like peace he just left he just like didn't want to deal with this situation I was like what this is like terrible apparent well no no Louie took took her out oh I thought he walked out the door no and he just like left he was like I'm not dealing with this right now I'm leaving no Lou no he was starting to
have a temper tum he grabbed her and like took her out oh I thought left L that there that's why I'm like oh sure go and make it better Lou just go that's why I was like yeah in the backg that's why I turned back on my camera just like yeah sure go tell her this whole SB story about how this happened make villain go ahead Lou just do it fine yeah okay I thought he just like thought he just dipped I thought he was like no I can't deal with children no by she's not a child anymore that's part of it she's not a child she's now at this point she's over 30 years old oh that' be mentally mentally she's over 30 CU it was 1796 it was during the French Revolution practically yeah so 1796 so if you think about it's now 1840s so she's well over 30 years old yeah huh it's interesting how Lou went from or not Lou um theant went from French like France to just going to America to a French Colony he was like
Noe I'm not leaving that much French I'm gonna keep my French I'm gonna go to s a French Colony they not gonna not gonna yeah I mean that kind of makes sense when the French come you know then they I mean that would make sense cuz that's where you feel like you're the boat he was probably on a French boat yep it's all piecing together now you would say at a French Colony cuz where yeah going to go but yeah I love it I think it's awesome it's such a great it's such a great script this is this is so much fun I had did you guys have fun you Vicki and Cat did you guys enjoy it absolutely and I love the whole outfit you've got on there Aubrey just really you know I just got to have my little my little uh have to be in style you know so much fun you see why I was like I must play the start oh love it anyways you guys are awesome and great we should probably get going have to get going so you guys have you
