welcome back everyone i'm mary welch nurse practitioner and host of the winning at weight loss 2.0 online show and i'm very happy to welcome our guest today die emanuel hi ty hello mary hi it's great to be back yes i'm so excited to have you here um dai is a super dad dating his wife with the lead by example way of living and a contagious personality as you can see just by his image right there who's on a mission to positively impact one million role models around the globe to lead a functionally fit life through education encouragement and community he's an award-winning digital thought leader author distinguished toastmaster did a recent tedx talk keynote speaker and a former partner and chief operating officer of a multi-million dollar retail company he's a sought after lifestyle mentor and an executive performance coach we're so lucky to have you and i love the topic that you're talking about

about being a champion of change which is so important for people as we get ready to like change our life and our lifestyle and commit to that i know for me as i was on my journey to lose 80 pounds change is a little scary so um and you know setting yourself up to possibly fail or i don't know so i'm really happy to hear what you have to say so jump right in how did you start doing this and um why why are we all so averse to change well i mean change is different right like bottom line change is really what change means it means going from something to something different the path isn't clear appearance and because the path isn't clear you know connecting from one state to another state there's a lot of things we fill in the blanks with our imagination our subconscious even to the point where maybe some irash start to populate that that that belief that maybe maybe change is impossible for me you know and

maybe if i do try to change i might fail you know so there's a lot of fears that start to churn up within us especially when we start to gene certain situations but i guess it depends a bit on the types of change that we're looking to facilitate but you know based on the nature of the summit and of course to the themes that your summit covers i i think about oh it's not i think a matter of changing your physicality it's often changing your lifestyle changing how you look how you think how you relate how you feel there's so many aspects that are changing while you embrace that process you know you start to trust the process don't we you know we just sort of hope that if i keep doing the right things for the right reasons that maybe the right results will start to happen but there's no guarantee is there and i think that's also a concern another fear another way to sort of rationalize our

way into not changing and and so i i've become very fascinated with this because like yourself i too have had an experience where i released a lot of weight you know at age 14. i remember the doctor playing my mother's side of the doctor's office betty ann your son died he's morbidly obese and here i am i'm like i don't know what morbidly means i don't know what obese means i don't know what morbidly obese means that but it doesn't sound good you know and and years of nurturing myself with foods that were very high in calories very poor in nutrition value playing video games watching movies you know chasing dopes while avoiding some of the more serious things that were happening in my life and and so i started to withdraw and you know i'm not here to rehash a lot of what i imagine a lot of us have felt or maybe are feeling right now you know that that feeling of being isolated by choice right because the low

self-esteem the low self opinion the the like i know i felt at that time i felt depressed quite often you know even entertained the idea that maybe it would just be so much easier if i didn't have to be here that's awful you know when i think back on i'm like wow you know to to be in that plate

or that's what part of the story of what just brought me to where i am today and then for 20 months you know i i just trusted that if i kept doing the right things that i eventually would get healthy and i would be happier i would be more excited about my life and feel more connected with the people in my life and and i just had to do it one day at a time you know but over 20 months everything changed by the end of that i had a very different outlook on change very different outlook and you know some people might refer to more of a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset i i also just believe that i was capable of so much more you know that that belief in myself went through the roof now of course there was i was still a teenager you know and there's still a lot of those other growing pains pardon the pun but quite literally yeah you know and but that was a very early on experience that i'm very grateful for having

because it really impacted me very positively oh for sure i mean being 14 that's such a difficult time with hormones and kids and being you know developing your identity and um you know being someone obese now i can see people that are heavy and overweight actually my son was playing football and there was this really really heavy kid on the other team and i just thought oh he already looks like his knees hurt and it's hard for him to run and i felt sorry for him and hoped he would get some help you know um so it's nice you're able to shift and now inspire people about that and making the changes thank you yeah so so you touched on sort of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset so tell us a little more about that well you know we we interpret our experiences as a certain way right i mean let's just talk about the human condition you know we we're born we're raised by maybe a community maybe some

individuals you know maybe they're our parents maybe their grandparents i mean you know we're influenced by a lot of things we observe we hear we read we experience and that forms a lot of our beliefs early on we start to connect the dots we develop values from that and maybe some guiding principles and along the way we experience some pretty big things in our lives as we age as we grow as we mature or i like to feel we evolve right we're always evolving into something you know and and hopefully that's something greater than we were before i believe we're we're nothing but potential you know but it might just be a matter of tapping it into that and realizing that wow you know whatever we want to do we we can quite literally do well obviously within reason but this human condition we're learning as we go and we face heartache we face challenges we face things that quite frankly intimidate

us quite deeply and might push us back to the point where we want to retract or hide or isolate or ignore some of the other things that we really want in our life and so when i think back on certain perspectives that have been formed based on my past experiences i know earlier on especially when i was at my heaviest i i honestly believe that i couldn't change i had beliefs that no one's gonna want me you know and there was a fixed idea like a belief that no i'm stuck like this it's it's and it's not going to get better it's probably you know worse you know like so it was almost negative mindset but it was very fixed i didn't feel that there was any wiggle room you know and i think when we look at our own perspectives on how we look at things it's just a matter of being more inquisitive questioning some of our belief systems why we think a certain thing why do we feel a certain way what influenced that to begin with

because i think back in my own past a lot of my behaviors were role modeled by other people in my life especially in my late teens in my early 20s into my late 20s like the certain associations that i had you know it was believe that yeah you worked hard but you played harder you know i i consumed alcohol quite a bit it became what food was for me in my early teen years you know alcohol then became that same sort of escape a way of coping with some of the negative thoughts and thought patterns and beliefs that i had about myself and and so you know to see history repeating itself it's like wow man i think i figured this out by then but no no no no i had to work through another change right and uh but along the way you know this growth versus fixed mindset is really just two different perspectives two different ways of interpreting our life our human experience that we're each very fortunate to have

and if you really are so fixed that things can't change you're pretty much living a one-track life no life is dynamic it moves in lots of directions i mean let's just look at the last year and a half that we've had it was very different i don't think any of us forecasted for that right and yeah we see people adapting people still continue to thrive they still figure out new ways of connecting it it's it's remarkable so you know yeah anyway so that's sort of where i was going with those two sort of mindset perspectives right and and it's true and and i think if you're not growing i mean even for me i wouldn't have guessed i'd be doing stuff like this um you know before i started my weight loss journey and it just one thing leads to another thing and as long as you're open to the possibility and willing to try new stuff it can be a lot of fun and yes so yeah even my whole career everything

really went differently like i started out in college and engineering and ended up in nursing you know who would have thought and at the time it seemed terrible because my grades were not good and i didn't do well in engineering and i thought i'm a failure and who who knows you know so you sort of beat yourself up and then you go to this other path and it works out just fine so and mary i mean how magical you know for you to come through that and experience that because it then it provides a new filter through which you see your life right it's how you analyze new opportunities or experiences you know like it literally i just equate experiences to new filters you know and and just shifts our perspective ever so slightly but that slight shift in perspective can sometimes take that thing that you thought was insurmountable that challenge that thing that you feel and i've identified as it's holding me back in my life

because of this big thing i can't change or i'm stuck and all of a sudden that little shift it could be just someone saying hey you know what have you thought about doing this we tried this you know like or even ourselves saying you know what if i did just try something different than i know that i've been doing right now like at me at 14. i'm like what if i actually just started to move my body every day what if i changed what i put in my mouth every day what could happen well lo and behold lots happened right and but it was that little shift in my beliefs just enough to show me that there is a different way and that change was possible and it was very much possible because i allowed it to happen i chose for it to happen i acted and and i think the thing that really holds a lot of us back is lack of clarity and lack of confidence and i really feel those are two very important aspects because when i think

back to my own experience and for anybody that wants to experience change there might be something in your life right now and you know it might be like a little think about it this way it's like you got this little thorn you know everyone's small we might get a thorn or a splinter under the skin and it's like you know it's there and it's like this tiny little twig right it's like barely anything and it's there and it just it aggravates us it annoys us it's almost like getting a little seed or like a strawberry seed stuck in between your teeth right it's just like you're just there sort of picking at it and it's there and it's there but when you're experiencing a lot sometimes you can just sort of ignore that little annoyance you know like a little splinter it's like i don't have the time i don't have the right tool to pull this out right now so i'm just gonna try to ignore it i'll go about my day and i'll deal with

it later but it's amazing how we do this with our health all the time there's little things that pop up on our radar and and they're they're signs that things aren't going the right direction and yet we become very good at sort of turning our gaze to look somewhere else so we can avoid it or ignore it until we can't you know until you're in a doctor's office and the doctor's pulling your mother aside saying betty and your son's got asthma his joints are inflamed you know he's morbidly obese like he's gotta lose some weight you know he's gotta get healthy i mean he's gonna be diabetic like i couldn't ignore it too much after that you know it's like okay there's there's a big change that need to happen here but it wasn't until i was ready to make you know so so there's three questions three questions that i feel everybody that wants to experience a little bit or a lot of change in your life these are

ultimately the three questions you want to ask yourself to get clarity and confidence because once you're clear in the past or the actions to take and you're confident that if you do those things like you're confident in your ability to be able to move forward because you're now clear on the path taking action and repeated action way simpler way less friction i might even go as far to say it's a lot easier okay but i don't like saying that because you know easy is such a subjective term i know some people are like you know because i'll tell you the first day that i went on my mountain bike that my dad bought me to help me lose that weight it was not easy it wasn't simple it was a very hard ride you know because i was obese i was out of shape i was deconditioned i had asthma like oh my goodness it was hard but it was worth it so here's the three questions question number one can i do this

simple right pretty simple can i do this so in our situations mary it's like we ask ourselves can i you know i imagine you were asking can i lose 80 pounds can i release this weight you know can i do this and we when we start to dig into that when you actually start to sit down and reflect can i actually do this thing that i want to do and maybe it's changing your career it's like can i change my career it's like of course we know instinctively we could but sometimes we have to build the confidence right and maybe we have to get clear on what we need to do and this often relates to education expanding our perspective because once we expand it all of a sudden we start to build that confidence and self-belief yeah i can do this if i do these things and and the cool thing is there's lots of people out there that probably already done something very similar so we can draw on inspiration and gain more

confidence by saying well look so-and-so did it you know people are listening to this i did it mary did it wow i could probably do it too so can i do this you've got to come to a point where it's not just a in your mind a yes it has to be in your heart yes okay so you got to go from thinking to feeling here because when you're feeling connected to that yes way more powerful a lot more momentum right out of the gate yeah and so true you i mean i found podcasts where people lost lots of weight and listened to them because i figured if they could do it i could do it so that helped me a lot so i'm glad you brought that up just love it so you know exactly what i'm talking about yeah and that's why this summit's so cool because it's doing exactly that for everybody else right it's building that belief and that confidence and that clarity and so now you go to question two so you gotta hell yes for question one yeah i can do this

okay now what okay number two now you move on to question two if i do this will it work okay that's a pretty good one so if i now start to do the thing that i've identified i need to do to start to create the change that i want will all that effort actually pay off you know will it work will i get a positive result and and this is where we start to draw on past experience a lot that's our default you know especially in weight release right like when we think about releasing weight that excess body fat especially right when we're releasing that inflammation it's it's not easy it's not hard it's just a process right that we have to just trust and and very often and i think about it you know i remember at age 11 and 12 being more active with my friends and just thinking that geez i wanted to play sports with my friends but i don't look like them i'm not losing weight you know like and so and once a while i might

lose a bit i go down a belt size but then i'd come back later and you know so this is concealing so in my mind i'm like if i do this will it work well maybe no it's never worked before so why should it work now so you know the self-doubt those limiting thoughts start to appear and they start to draw on past experience but to be honest there's no connection between what happened in the past and what's happening right now other than yeah you may have experienced that so it's on your timeline but it really has no influence whatsoever on what you're doing right now they're completely different situations because you're a different person now than you were say five ten twenty years ago even who you were last week you know situations change and so can i do this will it work you know if i do this will it work it's a matter of getting to the point where the confidence is there that trusting that if i do the things that

i've now educated myself because of the answers of question one that that yeah i i believe i can get some results too and this is especially great for people to listen to a summit like this or to podcast of other people with similar stories because it's just going to solidify again the confidence and clarity needed to take action now this question three so you got a yes and you got a yes okay and now it's question three is it worth it is the change worth it or as i often will say you know i i coach organizations and teams and all that stuff and uh that that's appropriate if you're talking to a group to use the term it right that sort of generalized term is it worth it because as a group it might make sense but when we're talking about the individual the person what i encourage people to ask themselves is am i worth it now that one whoa that was not easy to answer okay it's not i mean you have 14 did i believe that i

was worth losing the weight i did i believe that i deserved a better life i'll be honest with you no you know i didn't i didn't know any better i i didn't uh but this is the really cool part was i remember being vulnerable with my parents and letting them know how sad i was and all the challenges i was dealing with but also letting them in that i really wanted to make a change i didn't want to be the way i was anymore and that unconditional love and support that i received really helped me truly connect with am i worth it well yeah i'm worth it they know believe i'm worth it so i now believe i'm worth it because sometimes we've lost the belief in ourselves but trust me do you ask the people that are most important in your life and closest to you they're always gonna say you know you're gonna say am i worth making this change they're gonna be like hell yeah it's like come on how can i help you how can i support you

and and if they're not asking that huh look for new associations you know and that's really where there's could be a fourth question it's like who can help you right now and what community do you need to belong to notice i said not join okay it's not a community to join it's a community to belong to there's a different feeling that comes in a person in us when we feel like we really belong somewhere like that's that that's so powerful so motivating inspiring uplifting it's just a much more positive energy to work from so those are the three questions yeah and i think they're great really um can i do it if i do it will it work and is it worth it or am i worth it and you know self-worth is something i know my self-worth and really even self-care was very low you get to where you're taking care of everybody else and you're putting yourself dead last and um i think often excess weight is a symptom

of something else and it's tied to emotions and coping and that and as you at least for me when i stopped using food to soothe or you know deal with stress then i got to learn how to manage feelings and you know process them and take care of myself and it's really gratifying and i'm surprised it took me like 50 years to figure it out but i'm glad that i did because it's really nice on this other side um so this is just really good information and there's so much to it but i think if people are listening to the summit and gathering information this is a big piece to not be afraid to change i also like it doesn't have to be all at once your journey took 20 months and i think people sometimes set themselves up to be all in too fast with the timeline that's very short and for me i didn't care when i started i didn't know i was losing 80 pounds i just wanted to start losing and i had a coach and you

know when i i was like i've never weighed less than 175 as an adult so if i get there that'll be great and i got there just thought you know you could be lower and i thought she was crazy but i'm like all right kind of trust the process i'll just keep going and see where i land and you know it's like another 25 30 pounds and i'm like who knew i didn't see that she kind of saw it so and that's exactly it right it's it's that association that connection you know and and that's wonderful that you had a coach i think that is so instrumental uh for a lot of us to to facilitate changes especially the big ones because you know we often put our own needs last when you work with a coach they put your needs first you know they really do they and they hold you accountable like it's it's wonderful right and sometimes we don't have that in our lives we just don't have it yeah and they hear what you say

and then they call you out and they're like you know that's just a story that you know question that and it's like oh i guess it is a story or maybe that isn't true or maybe there is another way and i wouldn't have thought of that on my own so i would say for sure that was super valuable and one of the keys i um linked to success now almost three years out this is the longest wait has stayed off and i know now that it's staying off at first i was like i don't know i don't know you're different it's paying off and you know as time goes by i'm like okay it is and i'm different and i agree with you it's a transformation no shift yeah so so so good so um you have a nice free offer for our audience how to develop a positive mindset tell us a little bit about this series then yeah so yeah you know i love to write i like to educate inspire motivate if i can and i always try to do it in a fun way and so uh there's a resource guide

as well as an email series i put together to really just help get people started with conditioning what i believe is the most important muscle and that's the muscle between years you know that mind of ours and i know it's funny i was i i did this keynote little side note here i did a keynote for for a very large bank and uh they happened to have a guest in the audience who was a friend of somebody there and they have to be a neuroscientist and uh they're like uh excuse me uh the brain is not a muscle so i i do have to watch when i say that but you know i'm trying to make it light of this but if you think about your brain as a muscle like any muscle you can condition it when you use it and there's different ways of using it right and so uh the positive mindset series is really to help you start shifting the perspective we were talking about earlier maybe open your eyes to different ways of looking at things different ways of

looking at yourself as well as provide some exercises some resources some links to other third-party resources that i found very useful in my own journey and helping me condition my mind to best support me and the changes i want to make in my life and so yeah i've put that together and i'd like to make it accessible to anybody that wants it so especially for those that are joining the summit so wonderful great and um if people want to reach out and you know work with you or find out more how what's the best way for them to get in touch with you well i was gonna say if you get the email series you'll have my contact details automatically uh but i am most active on facebook instagram and linkedin and the cool thing about having a unique name which i didn't think at the at the start you know i kind of thought my parents were weird you know i'm like what is this you guys are working really hard to do something

different here and uh because die very weird name right it's a welsh name for david and manuel is a portuguese last name it's like welsh in portuguese well yeah and as i say i'm canadian so live with it um but but it's such a unique spelling that if you you can put that in the right way d-a-i-m-a-n-u-e-l diamond wall you'll find me because no one else has got it and so uh i always just say to people say hey i heard you and mary on the summit and uh this is my big change that i'm working on that's a great way let's just start a conversation about your change that you're working on right i love hearing about people and what they're working towards what their goals are what their ambitions are what their visions dreams you know because hey we're all living a great life and why not share with one another you know share those experiences it definitely makes life a lot more fun and that's always been one of my core

values if you're not having fun well time to change some things yeah it's very fun yes and i can say you know just having more fun is easier when you weigh less because you can do things that you might not have done before and really enjoy it so so one point make a change honestly i was on vacation recently and my son wanted to rent a jet ski we were on the ocean and you know and i thought wow this is fun and very free and i don't know that i would have done it before and um it was like a nice experience not to miss out on so i love that it's so cool so cool yeah well thank you so much for your time this was really just great and for people that are thinking about change don't be afraid to make a change um watch this series check your emails for the rest of the um shows coming up for the winning outlet loss 2.0 online series and i hope you'll get something that will help you thanks so much dai and see everybody next time

he's an award-winning digital thought leader author distinguished toastmaster did a recent tedx talk keynote speaker and a former partner and chief operating officer of a multi-million dollar retail company he's a sought after lifestyle mentor and an executive performance coach we're so lucky to have you and i love the topic that you're talking about about being a champion of change which is so important for people as we get ready to like change our life and our lifestyle and commit to that i know for me as i was on my journey to lose 80 pounds change is a little scary so um and you know setting yourself up to possibly fail or i don't know so i'm really happy to hear what you have to say so jump right in how did you start doing this and um why why are we all so averse to change well i mean change is different right like the bottom line change is really what change means it means going from something to something

different the path isn't clear appearance and because the path isn't clear you know connecting from one state to another state there's a lot of things we fill in the blanks with our imagination our subconscious even to the point where maybe some irrational start to populate that that that belief that maybe maybe change is impossible for me you know and maybe if i do try to change i might fail you know so that there's a lot of fears that start to churn up within us especially when we start to gene certain situations but i guess it depends a bit on the types of change that we're looking to facilitate but you know based on the nature of the summit and of course to the themes that your summit covers i i think about oh it's not i think the matter of changing your physicality is often changing your lifestyle changing how you look how you think how you relate how you feel there's so many aspects that are

changing while you embrace that process you know you start to trust the process don't we you know we just sort of hope that if i keep doing the right things for the right reasons that maybe the right results will start to happen but there's no guarantee is there and i think that's also a concern another fear another way to sort of rationalize our way into not changing and and so i i've become very fascinated with this because like yourself i too have had an experience where i released a lot of weight you know at age 14. i remember the doctor playing my mother's side of the doctor's office betty ann your son died he's morbidly obese and here i am at 14 i don't know what morbidly means i don't know what obese means i don't know what morbidly obese means that but it doesn't sound good you know and and years of nurturing myself with foods that were very high in calories very poor in nutrition value

playing video games watching movies you know chasing dopes while avoiding some of the more serious things that were happening in my life and and so i started to withdraw and you know i'm not here to rehash a lot of what i imagine a lot of us have felt or maybe are feeling right now you know that that feeling of being isolated by choice right because the low self-esteem the low self opinion the the like i know i felt at that time i felt depressed quite often you know even entertained the idea that maybe it would just be so much easier if i didn't have to be here that's awful you know when i think back on i'm like wow you know to be in that plate

or that's what is part of the story of what has brought me to where i am today lessons going through the chat age rosa i'm sorry it just like kicked us off oh no uh i was gonna say and then for 20 months you know i i just trusted that if i kept doing the right things that i eventually would get healthy and i would be happier i would be more excited about my life and feel more connected with the people in my life and i just had to do it one day at a time you know but over 20 months everything changed by the end of that i had a very different outlook on change very different outlook and you know some people might refer to more of a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset i i also just believe that i was capable of so much more you know that that belief in myself went through the roof now of course there was i was still a teenager you know and there's still a lot of those other growing pains pardon

the pun but quite literally yeah you know but that was a very early on experience that i'm very grateful for having because it really impacted me very positively for sure i mean being 14 that's such a difficult time with hormones and kids and being you know developing your identity and um you know being someone obese now i can see people that are heavy and um overweight actually my son was playing football and there was this really really heavy kid on the other team and i just thought oh he already looks like his knees hurt and it's hard for him to run and i felt sorry for him and hoped he would get some help you know um so it's nice you were able to shift and now inspire people about that and making the changes thank you yeah so so you touched on sort of a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset so tell us a little more about that well you know we we interpret our experiences as a certain way right i mean let's just talk

about the human condition you know we we're born we're raised by maybe a community maybe some individuals you know maybe they're our parents maybe they're our grandparents i mean you know we're influenced by a lot of things we observe we hear we read we experience and that forms a lot of our beliefs early on we start to connect the dots we develop values from that and maybe some guiding principles and along the way we experience some pretty big things in our lives as we age as we grow as we mature or i like to feel we evolve right we're always evolving into something you know and and hopefully that's something greater than we were before i believe we're nothing but potential you know but it might just be a matter of tapping it into that and realizing that wow you know whatever we want to do we can quite literally do well obviously within reason but human condition we're learning as we go

and we face heartache we face challenges we face things that quite frankly intimidate us quite deeply and might push us back to the point where we want to retract or hide or isolate or ignore some of the other things that we really want in our life and so when i think back on certain perspectives that have been formed based on my past experiences i know earlier on especially when i was at my heaviest i i honestly believe that i couldn't change i had beliefs that no one's gonna want me you know and it was a fixed idea like a belief that no i'm stuck like this it's it's and it's not going to get better probably you know worse you know like so it was almost negative mindset but it was very fixed i didn't feel that there was any wiggle room you know and i think when we look at our own perspectives on how we look at things it's just a matter of being more inquisitive questioning some of our belief systems

why we think a certain thing why do we feel a certain way what influenced that to begin with because i think back in my own past a lot of my behaviors were role modeled by other people in my life especially in my late teens in my early 20s into my late 20s like the certain associations that i had you know it was believe that yeah you worked hard but you played harder you know i i consumed alcohol quite a bit it became what food was for me in my early teen years you know alcohol then became that same sort of escape a way of coping with some of the negative thoughts and thought patterns and beliefs that i had about myself and and so you know to see history repeating itself it's like man i think i figured this out by then but no no no no i had to work through another change right and uh but along the way you know this growth versus fixed mindset is really just two different perspectives two

different ways of interpreting our life our human experience that we're each very fortunate to have and if you really are so fixed that things can't change you're pretty much living a one-track life now life is dynamic it moves in lots of directions i mean let's just look at the last year and a half that we've had it was very different i don't think any of us forecasted for that right and yeah we see people adapting people still continue to thrive they still figure out new ways of connecting it it's it's remarkable so yeah yeah anyway so that's sort of where i was going with those two sort of mindset perspectives right and and it's true and and i think if you're not growing i mean even for me i wouldn't have guessed i'd be doing stuff like this um you know before i started my weight loss journey and it just one thing leads to another thing and as long as you're open to the possibility and willing to try

new stuff it can be a lot of fun and yes so yeah even my whole career everything really went differently like i started out in college and engineering and ended up in nursing you know who would have thought and at the time it seemed terrible because my grades were not good and i didn't do well in engineering and i thought i'm a failure and who who knows you know so you sort of beat yourself up and then you go to this other path and it works out just fine so and mary i mean how magical you know for you to come through that and experience that because it then it provides a new filter through which you see your life right it's how you analyze new opportunities or experiences you know like it literally i just equate experiences to new filters you know and and just shifts our perspective ever so slightly but that slight shift of perspective can sometimes take that thing that you thought was insurmountable that challenge that thing

that you feel it and i've identified as it's holding me back in my life because of this big thing i can't change or i'm stuck and all of a sudden that little shift it could be just someone saying hey you know what have you thought about doing this we tried this you know like or even ourselves saying you know what if i did just try something different than i normal that i've been doing right now like at me at 14. i'm like what if i actually just started to move my body every day what if i changed what i put in my mouth every day what could happen well lo and behold lots happened right and but it was that little shift in my beliefs just enough to show me that there is a different way and that change was possible and it was very much possible because i allowed it to happen i chose for it to happen i acted and and i think the thing that really holds a lot of us back is lack of clarity and lack of confidence

and i really feel those are two very important aspects because when i think back to my own experience and for anybody that wants to experience change so there might be something in your life right now and you know it might be like a little think about it this way it's like you got this little thorn you know everyone small we might get a thorn or a splinter under the skin and it's like you know it's there and it's like this tiny little twig right it's like barely anything and it's there and it just it aggravates us it annoys us it's almost like getting a little seed or like a strawberry seed stuck in between your teeth right it's just like you're just there sort of picking at it and it's there and it's there but when you're experiencing a lot sometimes you can just sort of ignore that little annoyance you know like a little splinter it's like i don't have the time i don't have the right tool to pull this out right

now so i'm just gonna try to ignore it i'll go about my day and i'll deal with it later but it's amazing how we do this with our health all the time there's little things that pop up on our radar and and they're they're science that things aren't going the right direction and yet we become very good at sort of turning our gaze to look somewhere else so we can avoid it or ignore it until we can't you know until you're in a doctor's office and the doctor's pulling your mother aside saying betty and your son's got asthma his joints are inflamed you know he's morbidly obese like he's got to lose some weight you know he's got to get healthy i mean he's going to be diabetic like i couldn't ignore it too much after that you know it's like okay there's there's some big changes that need to happen here but it wasn't until i was ready to make you know so so there's three questions three questions that i feel everybody

that wants to experience a little bit or a lot of change in your life these are ultimately the three questions you want to ask yourself to get clarity and confidence because once you're clear in the past or the actions to take and you're confident that if you do those things like you're confident in your ability to be able to move forward because you're now clear on the path taking action and repeated action way simpler way less friction i might even go as far to say it's a lot easier okay but i don't like saying that because you know easy is such a subjective term i know some people are like you know because i'll tell you the first day that i went on my mountain bike that my dad bought me to help me lose that weight it was not easy it wasn't simple it was a very hard ride you know because i was obese i was out of shape i was deconditioned i had asthma like oh my goodness it was hard but it was worth it

so here's the three questions question number one can i do this simple right pretty simple can i do this so in our situations mary it's like we ask ourselves can i you know i imagine you're asking can i lose 80 pounds can i release this weight you know can i do this and we when we start to dig into that when you actually start to sit down and reflect can i actually do this thing that i want to do and maybe it's changing your career it's like can i change my career it's like of course we know instinctively we could but sometimes we have to build the confidence right and maybe we have to get clear on what we need to do and this often relates to education expanding our perspective because once we expand it all of a sudden we start to build that confidence and self-belief that yeah i can do this if i do these things and and the cool thing is there's lots of people out there that have probably already done

something very similar so we can draw on inspiration and gain more confidence by saying well look so-and-so did it you know people are listening to this i did it mary did it wow i could probably do it too so can i do this you've got to come to a point where it's not just a in your mind a yes it has to be in your heart yes okay so you got to go from thinking to feeling here because when you're feeling connected to that yes way more powerful a lot more momentum right at the gate yeah and so true you i mean i found podcasts where people lost lots of weight and listened to them because i figured if they could do it i could do it so that helped me a lot so i'm glad you brought that up just love it so you know exactly what i'm talking about yeah that's why this summit's so cool because it's doing exactly that for everybody else right it's building that belief and that confidence and that clarity and so now

you go to question two so you gotta hell yes with question one yeah i can do this okay now what okay number two now you move on to question two if i do this will it work okay that's a pretty good one so if i now start to do the thing that i've identified i need to do to start to create the change that i want will all that effort actually pay off you know will it work will i get a positive result and and this is where we start to draw on past experience a lot that's our default you know especially in weight release right like when we think about releasing weight that excess body fat especially right when we're releasing that inflammation it's it's not easy it's not hard it's just a process right that we have to just trust and and very often and i think about it you know i remember at age 11 and 12 being more active with my friends and just thinking that geez i wanted to play sports with my friends but i don't look

like them i'm not losing weight you know like and so and once i might lose a bit i go down to belt size but then i'd come back later and you know so this is concentrating so in my mind i'm like if i do this will it work well maybe no it's never worked before so why should it work now so you know the self-doubt those limiting thoughts start to appear and they start to draw on past experience but to be honest there's no connection between what happened in the past and what's happening right now other than yeah you may have experienced that so it's on your timeline but it really has no influence whatsoever on what you're doing right now they're completely different situations because you're a different person now than you were say five ten twenty years ago even who you were last week you know situations change and so can i do this will it work you know if i do this will it work it's a matter of getting to the point

where the confidence is there that trusting that if i do the things that i've now educated myself because of the answers of question one that that yeah i i believe i can get some results too and this is especially great for people to listen to a summit like this or to podcast of other people with similar stories because it's just going to solidify again the confidence and clarity needed to take action now this question three so you got a yes and you got a yes okay and now it's question three is it worth it is the change worth it or as i often will say you know i i coach organizations and teams and all that stuff and uh that that's appropriate if you're talking to a group to use the term it right that sort of generalized term is it worth it because as a group it might make sense but when we're talking about the individual the person what i encourage people to ask themselves is am i worth it

now that one whoa that one's not easy to answer okay it's not i mean you're at 14 did i believe that i was worth losing the weight did i believe that i deserved a better life i'll be honest with you no you know i didn't i didn't know any better i i didn't uh but this is the really cool part it was i remember being vulnerable with my parents and letting them know how sad i was and all the challenges i was dealing with but also letting them in that i really wanted to make a change i didn't want to be the way i was anymore and that unconditional love and support that i received really helped me truly connect with am i worth it when i'm worth it they know believe i'm worth it so i now believe i'm worth it because sometimes we've lost the belief in ourselves but trust me do you ask the people that are most important in your life and closest to you they're always going to say you know you're gonna say

am i worth making this change they're gonna be like hell yeah it's like come on how can i help you how can i support you and and if they're not asking that huh look for new association you know and that's really where there's could be a fourth question it's like who can help you right now and what community do you need to belong to notice i said not join okay it's not a community to join it's a community to belong to there's a different feeling that comes in a person in us when we feel like we really belong somewhere like that's that that's so powerful so motivating inspiring uplifting it's just a much more positive energy to work from so those are the three questions yeah and i think they're great really um can i do it if i do it will it work and is it worth it or am i worth it and you know self-worth is something i know my self-worth and really even self-care was very low you get to where you're taking care of

everybody else and you're putting yourself dead last and um i think often excess weight is a symptom of something else and it's tied to emotions and coping and that and as you at least for me when i stopped using food to soothe or you know deal with stress then i got to learn how to manage feelings and you know process them and take care of myself and it's really gratifying and i'm surprised it took me like 50 years to figure it out but i'm glad that i did because it's really nice on this other side so this is just really good information and there's so much to it but i think if people are listening to the summit and gathering information this is a big piece to not be afraid to change i also like it doesn't have to be all at once your journey took 20 months and i think people sometimes set themselves up to be all in too fast with the timeline that's very short and for me i didn't care when

i started i didn't know i was losing 80 pounds i just wanted to start losing and i had a coach and you know when i i was like i've never weighed less than 175 as an adult so if i get there that'll be great and i got there and thought you know you could be lower and i thought she was crazy but i'm like all right kind of trust the process i'll just keep going and see where i land and you know it's like another 25 30 pounds and i'm like who knew i didn't see that she kind of saw it so and that's exactly it right it's it's that association that connection you know and that's wonderful that you had a coach i think that is so instrumental uh for a lot of us to to facilitate changes especially the big ones because you know we often put our own needs last when you work with a coach they put your needs first you know they really do they and they hold you accountable like it's it's wonderful right and sometimes we don't

have that in our lives we just don't have it yeah and they hear what you say and then they call you out and they're like you know that's just a story that you know question that and it's like oh i guess it is a story or maybe that isn't true or maybe there is another way and i wouldn't have thought of that on my own so i would say for sure that was super valuable and one of the keys i um linked to success now almost three years out this is the longest wait has stayed off and i know now that it's staying off at first i was like i don't know i don't know you're different it's paying off and you know as time goes by i'm like okay it is and i'm different and i agree with you it's a transformation no shift yeah so so so good so um you have a nice free offer for our audience how to develop a positive mindset tell us a little bit about this series then yeah so yeah you know i love to write i like to educate inspire motivate if i

can and i always try to do it in a fun way and so uh there's a resource guide as well as an email series i put together to really just help get people started with conditioning what i believe is the most important muscle and that's the muscle between years you know that mind of ours and i know it's funny i was i i did this keynote little side note here i did a keynote for for a very large bank and uh they happen to have a guest in the audience who was a friend of somebody there and they have to be a neuroscientist and uh they're like uh excuse me uh the brain is not a muscle you know so i i do have to watch when i say that but you know i'm trying to make it light of this but if you think about your brain as a muscle like any muscle you can condition it when you use it and there's different ways of using it right and so uh the positive mindset series is really to help you start shifting the perspective

we were talking about earlier maybe open your eyes to different ways of looking at things different ways of looking at yourself as well as provide some exercises some resources some links to other third-party resources that i've found very useful in my own journey and helping me condition my mind to best support me and the changes i want to make in my life and so yeah i've put that together and i'd like to make it accessible to anybody that wants it so especially for those that are joining this summit so wonderful great and um if people want to reach out and you know work with you or find out more how what's the best way for them to get in touch with you well i was gonna say if you get the email series you'll have my contact details automatically uh but i am most active on facebook instagram and linkedin and the cool thing about having a unique name which i didn't think at the at the start you know i kind of

thought my parents were weird you know i'm like what what is this you guys are working really hard to do something different here and uh because die very weird name right it's a welsh name for david and manuel is a portuguese last name it's like welsh in portuguese well yeah and as i say i'm canadian so live with it um but but it's such a unique spelling that if you you can put that in the right way d-a-i-m-a-n-u-e-l diamond wall you'll find me because no one else has got it and so uh i always just say to people say hey i heard you and mary on the summit and uh this is my big change that i'm working on that's a great way let's just start a conversation about your change that you're working on right i love hearing about people and what they're working towards what their goals are what their ambitions are what their visions dreams you know because hey we're all living a great life and why not share with one another you

know share those experiences it definitely makes life a lot more fun and that's always been one of my core values if you're not having fun well time to change some things yeah it's very fun yes and and i can say you know just having more fun is easier when you weigh less because you do things that you might not have done before and really enjoy it so so one point mary make a change be honestly i was on vacation recently and my son wanted to rent a jet ski we were on the ocean and you know and i thought wow this is fun and very free and i don't know that i would have done it before and um it was like a nice experience not to miss out on so i love that it's so cool so cool that's great yeah well thank you so much for your time this was really just great and for people that are thinking about change don't be afraid to make a change um watch this series check your emails for the rest of the um

shows coming up for the winning out weight loss 2.0 online series and i hope you'll get something that will help you thanks so much dai and see everybody next time take care bye
