What this episode is about

A summary of the discussion highlights Sarah Boone’s decision to waive a publicly appointed attorney, forcing her to represent herself, and the system’s response—providing limited court access, a state-funded private investigator, and structured time to build her defense while she remains jailed. It also notes the tension and challenges in ensuring a fair process for her self-representation.

Key takeaways

  • Self-representation in high-stakes cases reveals the absurd friction between procedural fairness and resource-starved defendants.
  • The ‘fair trial’ theater often hinges on boring logistics—laptops, timelines, and a private investigator—more than courtroom genius.
  • Sarah’s antics expose a paradox: more access to case data can magnify chaos when legal guidance is absent.
  • Public perception warps around sensational clips (suitcase video, bizarre ads), shaping expectations more than evidence.
  • Court systems compensate with procedural scaffolding, yet still struggle to prevent ‘unfairness’ claims from chaos-prone clients.

hey folks welcome back so today we got to talk about old Sarah Boon I'm going to start about a month ago when things started to really pick up when the judge finally made the decision Sarah you've gone through pretty much all of the lawyers in the country and you refused to work with all of them so as of right now you have officially waved your right to a public appointed attorney and from here on out you got to represent yourself and then right after that you probably saw Sarah put out this deranged ad for a lawyer it looks like an invitation to a ball at the mental hospital also anytime you see epic opportunity awaits head for the hills you'll most likely wake up in a motel bathtub in Alp Paso missing a kidney anywh who the judge makes that big decision and then for the month after that they had to figure out how do we allow Sarah to fairly build her defense while being in jail and not having a lawyer it's not so

easy so what they came up with was Sarah gets access to a laptop between the hours of 0800 and 1600 every day everything related to the case the discovery everything will be loaded up on the flash drive so Sarah anytime during that time period can go and get her laptop and the flash drives and then go to what sounds like an empty classroom in the jail and work on her case on top of the laptop and flash drives they made a private investigator that's paid for by the state available to Sarah to send off on investigations when they announced that and brought him up there I was thinking this poror schmuck probably has no idea what he's getting himself into God only knows what kakami investigation Sarah's going to send him out on and she was already taking tone with the poor private investigator immediately so how am I going to contact you are you going to come on Monday it's like Sarah this person is trying to help you everybody

here is taking mindboggling amounts of time to make sure this whole thing goes fair for you and you get a fair shot and you can't reciprocate by having a little good attitude on anything it's wild to watch Sarah has so many bad qualities and off-putting behaviors all working at the same time that it really is something and just to get back into the Sarah Boon mindset because this trial is a few short months away I watched the interrogation again definitely top five interrogation on the internet which to get up into the top five is really saying something and then I watch the infamous suitcase video with George begging for his life and her going that's my name that don't wear it out and that suitcase video really I think could be the most awful video on YouTube to the point where it's a little bit crazy that it's allowed to be on I'm glad that it is but how did that fall through the YouTube cracks

and and watching that the YouTube or the the suitcase video where George is begging for his life in the suitcase I had this fantasy I know they can't do it but how cool would it be if when Sarah leaves for court and she's away from her cell they bring in a company that builds sets for the movies and TV sets and they bring in workers for the company and they quickly industriously measure the outside of Sarah cell and all the other inmates are going who the hell are they what are they doing and then the workers go back to their workshop and they build a Hol Wood movie Set quality facade that seamlessly attaches to the front of Sarah's jail cell and makes it look like a giant suitcase and then they'll have it all ready and when Sarah is inevitably found guilty and sentenced they'll hook it up attach it to the front of her cell and then when she turns the corner she'll see the giant suitcase and then the guard acts like

it's nothing just yeah this is totally normal and there's even a giant zipper that he pulls down to reveal the door of her cell and then he just says Sarah get in she's going what the hell is this and she gets in and the last thing she sees is the the the guards zip up the big teeth of the zipper like some nightmarish insect and then she's going what the hell you can't do this you can't make my cell into a giant suitcase and then the next day when she's away eating breakfast or taking a shower or something take the whole thing down disass it and throw it away and everybody acts like nothing ever happened that's kind of what I hope happens yeah let's keep moving and so after that month where they tried to figure out where they did figure out all right this is what it's going to look like for Sarah to fairly build her own defense then they brought Sarah back in to tell her that so there was a status

hearing bring Sarah back in Sarah was really angry at that status hearing because she said that she didn't know there was a status hearing until the guards walked up and wrapped on her the bars of her cell and said Sarah you got you got court today and so she saying how how am I supposed to know that there's a court hearing how am I supposed to get this filing I don't have a phone in my cell and all of her complaints were like yeah Sarah that's why having a lawyer is really nice and convenient and it sucks not having one no one is arguing with you that not having a lawyer sucks and the judge is doing a really good job I was getting a little bit annoyed with the judge after six lawyers and then seven lawyers it's like what are we doing but there is a method to The Madness of dealing with someone like Sarah just like dealing with um what's his name the the guy that drove through the parade how do I forget

his name Daryl Brooks it's you gotta go way above and beyond even though it's probably reasonable to Forfeit her lawyer at five you got to keep going just so you can't she can't claim later this was unfair I the my chances to get a lawyer went away too quickly this is not fair I want a new trial so you got to just really slowly all right you get another chance you get another chance all right now it's acceptable to say you don't get a lawyer so she's mad I was how was am I able to find out about stuff I'm in jail and the judge is doing a really good job of just really nipping all those was in the bud saying well you don't it's not easy not to have a lawyer but we're going to keep working through and you're going to do this instead and you're going to do that and we're going to mail you all of the stuff that you maybe would normally we would just tell a lawyer and so she was Matt she thought that was really unfair and

then she also thought it was unfair the laptop she wanted the physical boxes of the discovery all of the evidence to be carded into her cell she said so at 3 in the morning she could work on it if she wanted to and also she could write on the actual physical copies again that was just met by the judge saying that's not the Jail's protocol we can't bring this whole stack of stuff into the jail they said no sorry Sarah having a lawyer not having a lawyer isn't easy and that's where you're at okay and so that one ends with oh yeah one more thing Sarah thought was unfair with that first hearing after the month of them figuring out what they're going to do with her is she wanted since it took a month to figure out how do we give Sarah the proper fair chance to build her defense that took a month she wanted an extra month she wanted the pre-trial and everything all of the dates that are set in stone already to

be pushed off another month it's almost been a half a decade and the judge again just quickly and simply didn't allow to place Sarah Boon games with it quickly and simply just said the dates are the dates Sarah which is smart because as much as Sarah wants this to be a misunderstood intricately complicated case with different El it's not it's just was you Sarah and George and the suitcase it's not like there was 20 people at the pl at the house for a party and you got to figure out everybody's story and go through everybody electronic data who did it's it it's just those two it's just Sarah what happened I mean you filmed it so we saw so why don't you just tell us your story real quick this whole thing should take about five minutes 10 minutes and then but Sarah thinks she's one clever away and a winning mindset attorney away from breaking this thing open and so which is delusional which we'll talk

about that all right so then she wanted an extra month the judge said no and then before that first s or um first first little court hearing after the month she had Sarah had already submitted five motions but the judge hadn't got them yet so she was like well what about my five motions and the judge was like oh I didn't see them yet they must not have come through so in a day or two there was quick Court appearances this last week like three in a row and so a couple days go by they bring her back in court again to deal with the Motions she put in a few of the Motions dealt with how she was going to get the discovery and everything so he was like we already dealt with those with the whole laptop private investigator that whole plan and then some of the other motions she put in is she wants the state to pay for a expert witness but which has that's been the story since lawyer 3 like two years ago

she wanted an expert witness to say to argue that she falls under the battered spouse defense and The Battered spouse defense is I had to kill my spouse there was no other possibility my life was on the line I was going to die in this horrible abusive situation if I didn't do it first and the main thing you got to have if you're going with the battered spouse defend is you got to have an expert witness to come in and say I'm a I'm a expert on all this and this does Meet The Battered spouse defense because of this this and this and not having an expert witness you can't really go for that defense and so in Sarah's mind she I think still wants to go with the not intentional which you can't not intentionally not open a suitcase when someone's begging for the life so that's stupid I think she's going to do the no malicious we were playing hide and go seek in a t small townhouse and it just got a little

bit sloppy drunk and it something really bad happened but it wasn't Mal no Malicia she's going with that I I would assume and then the healthy strong battered spouse defense well if you don't have any money and you don't have a lawyer and you don't have really anybody that thinks that it meets The Battered spouse defense it's hard to get the expert and I've talked about this before if you don't have a bunch of money to hire a sleazy expert that'll say anything for money the only thing left is a credible expert that's not going to put their reputation and their career and everything on the line by going up there and sitting on the stand and going to bat for Sarah Boon and so she wants this expert it's been going on for years I want this expert and I want the state to pay for it and the judge is going well what's the exp's name and Sarah just there she doesn't have one she just wants one but she doesn't have one in

mind so the judge said you can refile that motion when you actually have a name and we'll deal with it and then also kind of with that Sarah wants to depose people so she wants to know how if I want to depose people how will that work and I keep thinking who would she possibly depose it I mean really I I can't think of anybody maybe someone that dealt with George George was doing I think some like domestic violence type classes maybe someone that had to do with that part of their relationship the domestic violence bring someone in to say that George was really horrible and this and that but I don't know I can't figure it out is she going to depose the suitcase Mr suitcase where were you on the night of and everyone's like Sarah this is a giant Wast waste of time and so those motions were dealt with by saying Sarah if you don't have the names of the people that you might wanted toose or be witness or as your expert I

can't really do anything so I'm not officially killing those motions I'm just for now saying these are on hold until you give me those names and Sarah thought that was as you can imagine not fair and then a couple days later there's another court hearing that they had and the main thing they did on that one was Sarah put in a motion that she wants her her handcuffs taken off in court not to be Shackled so she can move around and write freely which I think is understandable the interesting thing about that one is it was the first time the most recent hearing it was like maybe 3 4 days ago was the first time we got to see Sarah question someone that was up on the stand so it was a preview of how it's going to go and she questions the witnesses and it didn't go great they who they brought up on the stand to deal with this motion is someone that works for the jail that had worked with security and bringing

Sarah from the jail and the court and so Sarah says I don't want handcuffs on or leg cuffs or anything I think it's fair to have those off while I'm in court so I can easily move around better and so they they call up swear a in the person that does the security for the transports and so the state is going what what are the reasons that you wouldn't want to take Sarah's handcuffs off and leg restraints off and he's saying well she refused to go to court for three times so that's technically considered going against the rules and maybe there was another there was a few things that they were like because she did this this and this at the jail nothing was like too crazy but because she did this this and this we think that for the safety of the courtroom and everything we should keep the the cuffs on and then it was Sarah's turn to question that person the security and she had the main issue she had with

question like officially questioning someone up on the stand was actually asking a question she wanted to just say a statement like I never missed court I he was saying that she refused to go to court three times and Sarah said that that didn't happen who was saying that and so those type of questions like who was saying that it was going pretty smooth but when she would just be like I never missed a court then the prosecutors you can imagine would object to the form of a question because it wasn't a question and then the judge would say sustained and then so a few of those happened where Sarah would say a statement the prosecutor would object to the form of the question and then the judge would say sustained and then Sarah stops and goes what does sustained mean and that's when it really sunk in like Sarah if you don't even know what sustained means you really shouldn't have flushed all of

your chances to get a lawyer down the toilet and also instead of spending hours and on this stupid doodle art project why don't you do a little research on on how it's this thing is going to go I mean you have nothing but time you're doing this instead of preparing for your for the murder case Okay so let's talk about a few things Sarah over and over again in her interrogation and in these Court hearings proclaims that it's not fair that's not fair it's unfair this is unfair that's unfair and I think where that comes from is Sarah one of Sarah's delusions is that she excels at everything that's what she she actually verbalized it once but I truly think she thinks that and if you think in your heart of hearts and deep down in your soul I excel at everything but in reality you excel at pretty much nothing the only way to explain away the fact that everything in your life is going terrible you're in a

financial freef fall you're too drunk most days to pick up your son haven't worked in years you can't take care of yourself your day hating someone worse off than you not the rip on a dead guy but he was even much lower functioning than Sarah and and then to just kickflip that in your mind I excel in everything I've always been a straight A student you can tell when somebody's really struggling with addiction when they start only talking about accomplishments from 20 years ago I am a I am a have always been a straight A student how old are you uh 42 but I've always been one all right so there's that I think that the whole I excel at everything that's why everything to her seems unfair and I do genuinely think because Daryl Brooks and Sarah Boon are both mind-blowingly insufferable but I think that the difference between them I think Daryl Brooks thought deep down I think he knew he was being treated fairly but he was trying

to be cunning and put it on the record and pretend like he was getting screwed over and not being treated fairly in hopes that down the road when he's maybe could get a mistrial and the people deciding that are only going off the Record maybe he could get a mistrial through that I genuinely think that Sarah believes that it's unfair which it's she's being treated with so much fairness it's almost comical over these years so much time and money and people's lives are going into dealing with Sarah after doing what she did and she just will not accept that this is her fault and everything that's happening is more than fair and she's been treated unbelievably well for what she did I'm glad we live in a society where someone like Sarah Boone gets this fair shot and all of the you know the business respect that comes along with being on trial no one's being mean to her or anything you know how many societies

throughout history after four years of being difficult and going against everything they try to do to give her a fair shot would just be like all right just take her behind the dumpster and shoo her listen we tried we really did it's been four years we been doing this we really tried Sarah but she's lucky she lives in she lives where she lives in the time period she lives in but let me keep going with this um I got a few more things all right I think the last thing I want to T pretend or talk about is I even think that I think that Sarah's hoping that when she gets in there and starts arguing her case people are going to think oh my gosh she was so abused and it and the The Battered spouse defense and Sarah had such a rough situation but from everything that I see her relationship with George is even more Sinister then maybe it appears somehow even with the suas video and how awful that is their relationship the more you

look into it is creepy and so here's what I think happened I think Sarah was dating a really decent guy he's done a couple interviews and he tells a story where it was like a week night and this is when him marriage with Sarah was really going down and Sarah brought back everybody at the bar and he was just trying to have a quiet night and get up for work and be a dad the next morning and he wakes up and some drunk dude's in his house going Sarah Sarah and he comes out and the guy kind of hit him with the like hey sweet party bro where's Sarah and he's looking at her and he's at him going how is this my life and Sarah was abusive towards him and totally wasted all the time and so he divorces her he if I remember correctly buys her out of the house so she has that chunk of money and lives off that that's how she gets the townhouse she has didn't work since then and so was in financial freef fall think

you get that big chunk of money one time but if you're paying rent and life expenses and everything with it it's going to go quick and so she goes from having a decent guy that's taking care of himself seems great to dating George and I think because why that happens is because Sarah one of her other delusions I guess it's kind of the same one that I excel at everything is she likes to be on this high horse of you know I I I'm SM I have my together I excel at everything and that's why I think she's genuinely enjoying this pre-trial stuff because everybody's polite during pre-trial the the prosecutor isn't saying this woman is a monster and she murdered none of that is happening yet so I think she's getting lulled with the the fake respect or the unearned respect that you get during the pre-trial no one's trying to be mean yet everyone's trying to be nice and accommodating going towards the trial date and I think

Sarah this is the last time Sarah's going to have this much respect and explanation and people are going to give her the time to the time to say what she wants to say this is really it and so she's playing lawyer and she's enjoying hey I'm on the same level as this attorney and I'm the judge and we're all working through this and and she likes to um the way that the reason I got this thought was she was talking in interrogation about how she's going to George's parole officer and she's talking about George almost the way that a mom would talk about a child that's having behavioral issues I know I can help him I he's come so far he's learning so much I his his parole officer is so great she's telling me how great I am for working with her on behalf of George she like George almost was like her little play thing and the only way she could have that is to find someone that had fallen lower than

her as far as being a functional adult because think with her husband who divorced her she at every turn probably felt bad about herself it's like Sarah you're not going you lost your job you're not going to work today you're two bottles of wine in already today you can't go pick up our son and so she probably always felt felt like the one that was out of control and not doing well and not taking care of herself and not measuring up to what she thought she was in her head and then all of a sudden she gets George so I do think George was her boyfriend and her companion but it also allowed Sarah to you know it's not I'm not I'm I'm it's not that bad because it's not as bad is maybe what George is going through it's like having a problem with addiction but your friend has a worse problem with the same addiction so you're like I don't need to work on mine I'm good so and so is way worse I'm not

like that at all and so I think that was a part of why what she was attracted to George as her little play thing I'll help you George I'll as the person that as the adult that has their stuff together I can help you George when really I mean they were the exact same minus like the money she got for the divorce which allowed her to have have the townhouse they were pretty much the exact same except maybe George was on Parole and doing moving through the criminal justice system a little bit more than Sarah but I mean it's pretty bad and then I had one more thing I wanted to say let's see maybe I'll just cut it off there well anywh who people it's G to be something to watch I can't wait to um to see when Sarah when it starts to get a little bit heated because a big part of these trials like an experienced lawyer knows the other side is going to say some things that are hard to hear some things that maybe

hurt my feelings some things that maybe are I consider a little bit mean and Sarah has that fiery temper and so like I said I think she's going wow this is going smooth I'm so I'm such a yeah you know I'm really doing I'm all right I'm I'm I'm moving through this thing and then I'm interested once the prosecutor really starts going this woman did this and this woman did that let's play the video I don't think Sarah realizes the moments that are ahead of her once the video starts being played and the prosecutor starts telling her how it is and is she just going to be sitting at the table alone that is not that's not easy but all right going to cut it off there love you all see you next time why Sten why sham
