As we continue seeking stories in countries no one has ever heard of, there is a small nation that's been hiding from us. One of the world's top 10 richest nations per capita with a sultan who in the '90s was the richest man in the world. But how come no one ever talks about this place? Unfortunately, besides its extravagant wealth, the few things we've heard about it have been negative. In 2019, the country shocked the world by announcing strict Sharia laws that included stoning as punishment. The backlash was so fierce that celebrities called for boycots and the sultan was forced to backtrack. But the laws technically still exist today. Amongst travelers, the country has a reputation of being a very boring place to travel to with our friend and YouTube creator Drewinsky having named it his least favorite and most boring country after traveling to all the countries in the world.
And today I'd like to talk to you a little bit about a country that I did not enjoy so much and that nation is called Brunai. This country doesn't seem very promising, but we have learned that behind every authoritarian regime is a larger population that lives their normal lives and that people are not their government. And so we thought, could we get dropped off deep into the rural heart of this small and supposedly very strict nation and hitchhike our way back to the capital to see if despite all this negative reputation, we could survive totally on our own. And well, as we were on our way there, we ran into a fairly big problem. An unexpected turn of events resulted in me not being able to come along to Bernay, which means Stafan and our cinematographer Cory would be going on their own. And at first, we were wondering if we should call the trip off. But no, I decided to send Stafan on his own. And to make it
even harder for him, I added a much larger mission for him to complete along his journey. I think his hiking is a little too easy.
No. So, I've prepared a letter that you can read once you arrive. Arrive where? arrived to wherever this little middle of nowhere we're sending you.
I'm shaking a little bit. That was That was pretty hitchhiking will be the main mission.
Mhm. And then this is the full mission. This is going to be uh this is going to be an adventure.
I think it's going to be a little hard. It might be very very hard. Okay, Cory, ready to both of you?
Ready? I think you guys have to go now. Yeah, we do. Yeah. Yeah, we have to go now.
Your flight is leaving. And so I called a driver in Brunai and asked him to take the boys to an unknown location at the furthest point that the roads will take him with his ultimate goal being making it back to the capital within 72 hours.
So we are about to send it. Feeling so giggly like so much in my body. How are you?
Good. Good. How are you? Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. It's a long ride. Yeah, it's a long ride.
Well, when a local says it's a long ride, then then then we know we're going far.
Okay. How you feeling? We're feeling butterflies for sure. We don't know where we're sleeping tonight. We don't know if there is people on this road that we're going to be on.
John, do you know what we're doing? Not really sure, actually. Okay. Okay. Okay.
We don't even know where you are driving us right now. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
So, it's a surprise. It's a surprise. Surprise. But you said it's you said it's far away.
Far away. Yeah. No hotel over there. Oh, there's no hotel. There's only houses.
No, there's no hotel. No hotel. Just houses. Wait, there's nothing to Why did I even take out cash then?
Yeah, it's around 30 40 of people. Where were we going now? Yeah. 30 to 40 people only.
That's like one family. Thomas said to me yesterday at WhatsApp, just drop them at the end of the road.
Come on, Thomas. It's already a challenge. You're just smiling and happy. Okay. Thanks for the drive, man.
And we don't know where on the map we are right now as well. I don't think that would have mattered because I don't know anything about Bnee. But but still, we don't know where we are.
Yeah. So, do I just leave you here or do the hell? We're far far away now. It's like the end of Brunai.
We have a letter here that we're going to read for ourselves. Okay. And see what it is. You're more than welcome to listen as well if you want to.
Yeah, I would like to. Okay. I'm nervous again. Okay. The letter goes. Welcome to Brunet. You are officially on your own. And although I know you will probably miss me where much, you won't miss me too much because I have created a series of challenge for you to complete on your journey. I've created for you an official mission log to connect with locals. You have to score at least 10 points from the list below to consider your journey complete. Maha. Good luck, Captain. You're in charge of the ship now. Be brave, be kind, and be local.
Yes, sir. Good luck. What do you say about the list? very very hot. Do you believe in us?
I do believe in you both. Yeah. Thank you. It was beautiful meeting you, John. Our first Bernan friend, if we may call you a friend.
That's already one mission. That's all right. She national hero. Wish you all the best.
There he goes. It's now just you and me, buddy. Yeah, man. Strangely enough, the only thing out here was a small police outpost that asked Stfan and Cory to sign in.
Where are you going, sir? So, we are going to the capital like walking hitchhiking maybe.
Where should we walk? Would you say if we're like walking towards the capital? You just follow this from this one.
This one here. Is that towards the capital or further away from the capital? Further away. Yeah.
Which is the way which comes closer to the capital? Can I go back to jail? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
The best triple people in the world. Thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. Call us if you need us. We got your back. Why did I say that? Why did I say that?
I said, "Call us if you need us. We got your back." You said that to the police. Why did I say that when he said that there's only like 20 people living here? It's like just by chance that we saw the police people, but like other than that, there's been no one.
Yeah, it's been nobody. We have been walking for Yeah. at least one and a half hour and we haven't seen a single soul. Now, when I say it, that car is actually coming.
Yeah, that's the that's the direction we came from. But if that car comes back, it's ours. One car in one and a half hours. So, if we continue like this for three more hours, maybe two more cars.
If you looked at this drone footage, you would not feel so confident. Me and Cory have came to conclusion that it's pretty hot. It's pretty humid and we are doing I don't want to complain, but it's we've been walking for quite a bit. Haven't seen a single soul. Is that a car coming?
Get in. Get in. Hello. Thank you so much. Where you want to go? Uh going to somewhere. We just want an adventure. Well, if you could drop us in the next town. It's like 8 km, 9 km.
Is that Thank you. Okay, let's go. What's your name, sir? I'm Maruji. Nice to meet you, Stefan. Nice to meet you, guys. Takasi.
Amazing. You have some good AC here in the car. You guys from Brun? Uh, we are Indians.
Are you Indians? Yeah, we are contractors. We're doing our own business here. Amazing. Do you know like where we are right now in this area?
Lobby. There's nothing much in lobby here in Yeah, just like here. And this this it says like lobby 4 km. What happens when we arrive there?
Is there any coffee shop? You want to have a coffee? Yeah. You guys have your guys have your food or not?
Um, not not yet. Not yet. Get them some food though. Have some. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate you. Thank you so much. Yeah. Nice to meet you.
Wish you magic on your journey in life. Appreciate you, man. What was your name?
Maruji. Maruji. Stefan. Yeah. All right. Bye. Kum, Roji, thank you. I never enjoyed AC that much in my entire life. And we got our first hitchhike.
We did. We got like a boost on this very long road. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, we continue. And here we have a sign. It doesn't say 10km anymore.
Says 1K. It says 1K. We're chipping. We're chipping them down. All right. No, please. That was four cars. We haven't seen cars in, you know, forever. Then one car comes, then four car comes.
There's one more. Okay. Please. Now, now it's happening. Hold your thumb lower. Hold your thumb lower.
Lower. That was five cars back to back to back to back. It's not really working.
Stings a little bit, you know. It hurts. It hurts. Reality has sunken in. And it is hot outside.
It's so hot. It's pretty tough right now. It's noon. I think we thought it was going to be easier.
Yeah. Yeah. And I'm getting I'm getting I'm getting a bit hungry. Hungry. Hungry. Hello.
Okay, I can see a flag. Bernet flag. This car, you stopped there. Hello. Hello, sir. Can I ask you a question? Nice to meet you. Hi,
Stefan. We are exploring your country. Very beautiful country. Nice. Nice place here. Hi, Stefan.
Hi. Hi. How are you? My nephew. Oh, nephew. Uh, do you guys know if there's any place where we could like buy lunch or so?
Come. Okay. Thank you. Just have this one only. Thank you so much, guys. This is so kind of them. Oh,
nice, guys. Thank you. Oh, what is Thank you. I'm fire. Firefighter. Firefighting Bernet.
Yeah. Well done. Well done. Yeah, we on an adventure here in your lovely country.
Thank you guys. Yeah, super kind of you. How is life in Brunet for you? Good times. So much nature.
Bit lip village. No need to spend money. If you want to eat fish, you can catch fishing. Right. You want to go to wasai waterfall?
Would you go with us to the waterfall or just drop us off? We can go. You can go.
Yeah. Let's do it. Let's do it. So, it is ironic. That's where we started today.
Yeah. And we've been like been struggling just to get this far. You walk from here to there.
Yeah. Yeah. We walked from far away. He seems to be a legend. So we see where this experience takes us and we still don't have anywhere to sleep.
You talked to Thomas. So how far did you make it the first day? Yeah. Literally nowhere.
Stefan. Yeah. Nice to meet our name Sam. You have same name. Alan. Alan. Alan. You and your brother Alan.
And you from Brun? Yeah. Yeah. We have uh another waterfall seven waterfall. Alan's brother explained that he has a secret local waterfall that he and his family could take us to, but recommended we buy some hiking gear at the nearby local shop.
Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Alan and Alan. Okay, this is their number one favorite spot. So, our expectations are high. There's no tigers in Brunai, right?
There it is. How old were you first time you came here? 10 years old or 11 years old. Already arrived here.
Okay. Then you found it. Yeah. It's cool to see where a day can bring you if you like open up to see what comes. We're having an adventure and collecting another point today. We made it to Brun.
Hello. Let's go. Superman. And just like that, all it takes is one person to open doors you never even knew existed.
I'm a happy boy. Are you a happy boy? I'm a happy boy. Honestly, this is a this is an amazing sunset. I mean, look at that. That's beautiful. Is this your happy place? Yes.
With the sun setting and no place to stay yet, Stefan and Cory now had very few options in front of them. You start right back to uh Alan's house. Hello, Alan.
Yo yo. Welcome to Alan house. Alan house. Yeah. But not your house. Your brother house.
My house there. Yeah, this is Alen house. This is Alan house as well. We're going to ask Alan now if we can stay here or not. Bit nervous.
Dinner together. Yes. Amazing. Let's go. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Sleeping with both of you here.
Really? Yeah. Tonight. So, we're sleeping here? Yeah. The three of us. Did you hear that?
Epic. We're having a sleepover here. We're having a sleepover today. We can relax then.
We thought we were going to sleep on the street and we spanking. This is Thank you.
You're the best, man. This is okay. No problem. This is why they're giving us towels. We're going to sleep in here. We met almost entire
This is This is It's so sick. It's so sick. We were then introduced to the rest of Alan's family before being invited to share dinner with them.
Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. We are now family. You walking from there. The moment has arrived. Sleepover. being a friend, too. See you on day two. Oh, hey. I didn't see you there. Don't worry about me. I am sad I wasn't able to join them on this adventure, and I am blown away by everything that they got up to. But, uh, I'll be back on time for the next adventure. In the meantime, since I'm not really doing much in this video, I've been tasked with letting you know about our favorite life hack over the last few years and the sponsor of today's video, SY. Sy is a worldwide EIM app that works in over 200 countries.
Instead of wasting tons of time at the airport, buying a SIM card, and losing your phone number, or paying insane roaming fees, we just install the SY app once on our phone, and then it works wherever we travel. It's super simple. You easily search the eim for the country you're currently in and follow the instructions and within a few minutes you've got data on your phone. And it's not just about staying connected. Sy also protects your privacy. You can change your virtual location, block ads, and even keep your browsing safer with builtin web protection. Plus, their support is 24/7 if you ever get stuck. So, if you are planning travels anywhere abroad, download the SY app and use the code for 15% off any plan. You can also scan the QR code on screen or go to sail.com/yest.
And now back to our adventure to see if they complete my travel challenge and managed to hitchhike their way back to the capital city. It's an honor to wake up to see that Alan is sitting here.
Your breakfast already for you and Cory. Welcome to day two of this adventure. Cory is awake. Ready to eat breakfast. How do you say good morning?
Sali morning. Good morning. Thank you for making breakfast here. Okay. Enjoy your breakfast.
Thank you so much. We local. Are we getting points now for like learning languages? Yeah. So check.
After breakfast, Alan and Alan wanted to show us some of their favorite parts of Brunai. But most importantly, they were committed to helping them take off their missions.
Made it to the ocean. Ocean of Bnee. Now we just need to figure out, Cory, if we're on the west, east, is the ocean to the south. We're somewhere in Brenade.
3 2 1 action. We we cooking inside the bamboo. Oh, okay. We've been trying seven, eight times now. Never let us pay.
And after the day of exploring, it was time for them to check off another mission on their list, learning to make a local Brunai dish.
Ah. Well, I don't know my but we I follow. You didn't understand that. No, I didn't. I didn't. But we're going to we're going to work with it.
We smoke the rice in the bamboo. So, we take the rice. Yeah. Take and then put the rice inside the bamboo. And then we burn the bamboo.
And now we're going to cook our own meals again. Yeah. Take the bamboo first. Is this where we cook the chicken?
Yeah. This one. Oh, this is here. Yeah. Hey, hold on. Alan told me he's going to show me the river.
Name of the river. Yeah. Oh, wow. You have a river next to your house. I'm fishing it. Yeah.
So, we're going to try to get the fish and then cook it. Mhm. It's extremely inspiring to see how they are so selfsufficient with fishing their own fish in the river, growing their own stuff, really finding their own way of living here with their own community and yeah, happy to be part of this family now.
Wow. Katnab. Okay. Wow. Twins, huh? When did you learn to cook like this and live like this?
I learned from my dad, brother, my cousin. They teach me how to cook the bamboo. We use the bamboo to cook.
Ah, you don't need a pot. No, no need to. Okay. Well, let's go and get our our pot. Yeah.
Yeah. Moment of truth. Will I be accepted as Alan's brother or not? On the side. I did it.
Nice. Amazing. We follow the leader. We do this for the people of Brunai. Yes. The beautiful part here as well is that Cory and myself, we can't maybe always understand and communicate every word, but energetically like we can really understand each other. It makes me think about when we met sumos in Japan, you know, couldn't speak with them, but we still became friends and, you know, also had a sleep over there. So, it's a beautiful experience.
Happy to share it with you, brother. Yeah, man. Put the salt, garlic, onion, chili.
Okay. Now put into the bamboo like this. We close with pandan leaves. Nice. It's my mom.
Oh, mommy. And this she is my mother-in-law. My mom. It's my sister, the whole family.
I feel it. It's a party coming down tonight. Yeah. Do you feel it as well? Yeah. There's something brewing.
If you will here inside the bubble. Yeah. Here he comes. Let's see the process. Okay, take a bite here.
Wow, that rice is incredibly good. I was nervous, bro. Imagine drop that in front of everyone. 1/4 of the food is gone. Okay.
I need more inspiration, more happiness. We're not going to experience this anywhere else in the world, which I think is pretty amazing.
Oh, it is. It is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then this is mixed uh durian. What do you think?
It's good flavors. Yeah. Hi. Are you good? Yeah. I have a bit hard time to process what we're actually experiencing right now. It's like looking into a window in a very unique place in the world in this rural village and this place will for to be remembered. One of my absolute best experience ever had as a traveler. What's the secret to have all this good magic in the family? What's the secret to have all this love?
Sharing what you have. That is the secret one. M. If you do that like that, The family is become together with you.
You took us all the way into your home all the way to the core of your family and all the relatives here smiling.
That's why my family is very close with me. Mhm. That is the the sacred one. Zol is called
father help. We need help. What happened? Somebody here. Who? I don't know. two guys. Okay, wait. Wait for me. I go.
And then you look at us. You were like, "Oh, poor poor puppies. Poor uh six kids, one grandkid."
Yes. Plus two kids. Plus two. Oh, that's us. That's us. That's us. Who knows? One day we meet next country. Who know?
Have you uh ever thought about going to Paris? Uh before during school school time I going to Paris.
Yeah. Need to talk about this. Yes. Later later. We are ending the evening by taking a group photo of the entire family as a memory that we and hopefully don't share it forever.
Okay. Ready? 3 2 1 Good morning. Good morning. Sleepy head. Who's been sleeping all day?
But I was out partying last night. Okay. Yeah, we were dancing. Back to the middle school dancing mood.
Yeah. Yeah. It was so fun. It was so fun. And it was your birthday. What better way to spend it, right?
Yeah. Right. How does it feel to spend your birthday in a rural village in Bernet?
Oh, it's a dream. It's like the most It's arguably the most unique birthday I could have possibly had.
Yeah. Yes. We were like planning to like head to the capital. Yeah. That is your decision.
But I hope you stay one night for me. You know what? Screw that t-shirt competition. Staying. So now that they'd been convinced to stay with the family for another night, the guys decided to try and live a day in the life of a local Brunayian. Starting with attending the local mosque dressed in the appropriate attire.
Too big. It's okay. We are going to go to the mosque now. Legendalamkum. Salam. Oh, we used to follow you. Yeah, just follow feel very peaceful. It feels like everything is calming down on the inside.
So we always try to bring people together. Yes. You know, bring people together like
of Muslim. Yes. Thank you so much. Then they joined the rest of the family for an afternoon by the lake.
Welcome to Lagan Laal Recreational Park. Let's go. Wow. Is that love? I see. Wa. And to end the day, they settled in for their final dinner with the family.
Do you have my bed? So, it's time for the last dinner with with fam. I'm going to get emotional. I have a feeling.
Yeah. Me, too. Yeah. There's just so much love. You know, family is so important. And so, for my own family,
you know, I always want to spend more time with them. It's just hard to do. So, when you're welcomed in
to a family like this, it's such an amazing feeling. It's so hard to leave, you know.
It's so hard to leave. It's a dinner that we got invited to by Anna's mom, which feels incredible special. This is the fish.
Yeah. Hello. Come in. Come in. Come in. Yeah. What a beautiful living room. This is my father. This is a majesty, Sultan Brunai.
Sultan came and visit here. Yeah. Wow. What a lovely photo of your father. Sultan Brunai.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And as they all settled into Alan's mother's living room, Stefan and Cory didn't realize that something unbelievable was currently happening with the brothers.
Do you have any memory when you think about this home that comes to mind now? So many memories.
So many memories. So many. Crying because I'm with his mother. Yeah. I have the problem. I come here.
His father passed away. The last time I come inside the house. Oh, that was the last time.
Yeah. How long time ago? Canon 2001. 2001. That's mean 23 years. I don't come inside the house.
You have not been in this house? I just outside. Just go outside cuz I don't want
you don't want to come. Memory will come. Ah, too much emotions. Yeah. Good emotion.
Yeah. Uh Alan, very very strong of you to come today and to be here. Why was this home so much safety and so much love? Like why why this place?
Maybe because our relationship so close all have a good relationship. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear. Happy birthday to you.
Oh wow. I'm not crying. I'm not crying. It's you. To be so far away from home but feel like it's a new home, you know? I I thank you all for that cuz that's all that's all you. Yeah. I didn't know either.
It came out of nowhere. Ah, that's why you asked. She's the She's so nothing special for you.
Terry Makashi, thank you. This is wonderful. I want to say thank you guys for making it feel home for Cory and myself. And both of us said that we would remember this forever, forever and ever. Thank you.
We are family now. We are family. While they had enjoyed becoming part of the family these past few days, Stefan and Cory still had their hitchhike mission to the capital to complete. So with heavy hearts, they prepared to leave Alan's family. But it wouldn't be their final goodbye.
Last morning sentimental. What you plan today? Leave us. very sad. But you still wanted to meet us one more time before we leave.
Yes, of course. Tomorrow. See you at airport. We're doing an airport goodbye because we're family members.
Yeah, inshallah we can find nice person. Fingers crossed. Bye-bye. Oh, bye-bye.
Okay, back on the road. Yeah, back on the road. Back on the road. I dropped you here.
Okay. We're going to miss you guys, but we're going to we're going to make you proud.
We call you when we make it to the capital. Yeah. We made a terrible mistake. Made a terrible mistake.
They offered us to drive us, you know, all the way to the capital. But we're going to
We got to finish strong, you know. Gosh, I missed them. I know we do. We have approximately 3 hours left until the clock hits Venito. It's said to be like around 2 hours driving left. So, we're going for it. We got this, right? We got this. The sun is gassing. We are running low on time. We got to get our bread probably within half an hour or else we're cooked.
After no luck on the side of the road, the guys tried approaching this group at the local cafe.
Hello. Oh yes, please. Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. Alhamdulillah. Cool guys. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you guys. When we were standing like this. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He was one of the guys that just drove past us.
And after some nice chats and a quick lunch break, they decided to pop the question.
We're trying to get our way to the capital today by hitchhiking. I can send new.
Yeah. Okay. Thank you. Where did he pay? He paid the guy. This guy. Oh, this guy who left us.
Thank you guys. And with the new driver found, they were back to their race against the clock to reach the capital. We are going to get a half an hour ride close to the capital. Let's do it.
He took them to a nearby gas station to hopefully find someone who could take them the remainder of the way.
Thank you, man. Okay. Okay. Thanks so much. My guy pulled in here in this white car and he was he like smiled and waved at me. My friend, how are you?
You guys can do it. We're hitchhiking to the capital. Are you going that way? I don't mind. Yeah.
You don't mind? That would be amazing. Okay. Cheers, brother. Wow. We're doing it. And your name?
Pacman. Yeah. Pacman. Yeah. B AK MN. When we arrive, we will officially let you know if we made it in time or not.
We'll make it. We'll make it. Faster. Faster. There's the finish line. Yeah. Let's go. Oh, Are you okay?
My brother, my man, how are you? I hope that a video like this can reach other people's hearts and souls and remember, you know, remember why we are here on earth, right? And you are the proof of that, why we are here. You are the evidence of why we're here, right? We're here because of love and your family's love and nothing else
for you. What? What? You need to you need to read it right now. Dear Corey and Stefan, we only met a few days ago, but now that you're leaving this country, it feels so hard to say goodbye. At first, I thought you two were just strangers, but now you two became part of our family, and you'll always be. It's sad to think we won't be sleeping under the same roof anymore, and I already missed playing FIFA with you guys. Until we meet again, love you guys. Oh, that's so sweet.
Thank you. Yes. Going to miss you, brother. Yeah. You know, you have two uncles now.
Your brother, the man, and the heart of the family, the soul of the family. Our best to you.
Thank you. You are us. How forget? How could we possibly do that? We love you. You're love you too.
Love you too, man. We love you too, man. Bye. Thank you so much.
